Sugar bowl fiasco...not right!jsarno 01-03-2007, 09:24 PM I was shocked to see how many independants there are. Notre Dame Army Navy Troy State UConn Temple jsarno 01-03-2007, 09:26 PM And LSU shouldn't have to apologize for being selected to the sugar bowl. No one said LSU had to apologize. The selection committee should. They should not allow it. jsarno 01-03-2007, 09:28 PM The thing is service academies rarely get to a bowl game (hence, they can afford to be independent) and when they do, it's an extremely low payout. I'm not saying ND is wrong for taking advantage of their status... just don't cry about homefield advantage when you're getting a BCS payout of 8 million dollars, while everyone else has to share it with 9 or 11 other teams. ND isn't crying. Also, all those teams have advantages to being in conferences, ND has none for being independant, other than not sharing bowl money. Gmanc711 01-03-2007, 09:31 PM Who cares? I'm a Irish fan, and I'll be the first to admit that they don't even deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl. If there wasent an extra title game this year, I'd be suprised if they were even in a New Years day bowl. They beat no quality opponents and everytime they played a team that was worth anything, they got run out of the stadium. The only reason they are there is because they are Notre Dame.....again, coming from an IRISH Fan. jsarno 01-03-2007, 09:39 PM Who cares? Georgia Tech, Penn State, Mich. St., Purdue, UCLA and Navy. All of them had very good teams this year. They lost to top notch teams in Michigan and USC. (ps- UCLA beat USC) So why do they not deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl when they only lost to top notch contenders? EEich 01-03-2007, 09:40 PM I was shocked to see how many independants there are. Notre Dame Army Navy Troy State UConn Temple UCONN is Big East. itvnetop 01-03-2007, 09:40 PM ND isn't crying. Also, all those teams have advantages to being in conferences, ND has none for being independant, other than not sharing bowl money. you're right that ND has no scheduling advantages for being an independent- they annually have pretty tough schedules. but b/c they are ND, they have inherent advantages. they are the only school with an exclusive television contract with a major network. they have support b/c of their fan base. they can afford to be independent b/c of this. and b/c ND is this powerful, they are considered for BCS bowls with sketchy portfolios. here are ND's wins this season: Georgia Tech Penn St. Purdue Stanford UCLA Navy North Carolina Air Force Army I'm sorry, I'm not really impressed by any of those wins. UCLA, possibly. In fact, their schedule this season is weaker than in year's past, playing three service academies (all respect due to the armed forces). 10-2 is a solid record, but how does a 2 loss ND get a BCS invitation over a 1 loss Wisconsin (the capital one bowl???)? If any other major conference school had the same schedule and results as ND this season (with maybe one quality win), they would not be in the sugar bowl. ND gets plenty of advantages because of who they are. skinsfanthru&thru 01-03-2007, 09:49 PM LSU just got ripped off of a turnover on the replay, but luckily got it back a few plays later. jdlea 01-03-2007, 09:55 PM I'd agree that they don't necessarily belong there. They wouldn't be #11 in the country if they weren't Notre Dame. And they probably wouldn't be in this game if they weren't Notre Dame. Also, what's with NY guys being Notre Dame fans? jsarno 01-03-2007, 10:06 PM UCONN is Big East. Apparently not: NBC11.com - College Football - Conf: Ind. I-A (http://www.nbc11.com/cfootindependentsia/index.html) Those are all the independents in the NCAA div 1A. UConn is on it. It is possible that UConn is independant when it comes to football...like Temple is in the Atlantic 10 in Basketball. |
