Gibbs always will be my favorite coach of all time, but this year Parcells will be in the playoffs.
Gibbs' three-year record during his second act is nearly the same as the Marty/Spurrier years:
Gibbs is 21-26 in the regular season since his return; Washington's record over the previous three seasons was 20-28.
The difference is that Gibbs got us to the playoffs & won a game, hadn't happened since the Norv era in 99-00.
He's my favorite of all time too, and we'll be back in the hunt soon.

I'm not saying Parcells is highly overrated, his record speaks for itself. But lately his performance hasn't matched the media's hype of him. My post was meant to be more of referendum on the press who fawns and gushes all over him, but seem to have forgotten Gibbs great and superior track record.

I think the press has been doing Gibbs a favor as far as this goes. Despite last year's playoff win, Gibbs II has been a major disappointment thus far- double digits in the loss column two of three years. I love Gibbs but with 26 losses in his last 47 games, as opposed to Parcells 3 winning seasons in four years with Dallas, I'm glad the press isn't comparing him to Parcells at the moment.

A few things...
1. No question Parcells is a "personality" in addition to being a great coach. He's charismatic in his own weird way, a reliable quote, and the press eats it up. This has a lot to do with why they fawn over him.
2. This in no way makes him "overrated". Bill Parcells won two Super Bowls with the Giants (with two different QBs), took the Patriots to another, and had the Jets in the AFC title game one year.
3. Parcells owns Gibbs in head-to-head meetings. This isn't my opinion, it's a demonstrable fact. He holds a solid edge in their lifetime meetings, is 1-0 in playoff meetings, and is the only coach ever to beat Gibbs three times in one season.
Coaches that have won more than one Super Bowl: Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Tom Flores, Joe Gibbs, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, George Seifert, Bill Walsh, Mike Shannahan, Bill Belichick. Not exactly a pool of mediocrity.
Coaches who have won the Super Bowl with more than one different starting quarterback: Gibbs (3), Parcells (2), George Seifert (2).
Coaches who have taken more than one team to the Super Bowl: Don Shula, Parcells, Dick Vermeil, Dan Reeves.
The Super Bowl has been around for 40 years. If Parcells is so overrated, how come these lists aren't longer? Why is his name the only one which appears on all three lists?
Plus if people are going to rip Parcells for having done so little without Belichick, you also have to acknowledge that Gibbs is a rather timid 20-26 without the vastly underrated Ritchie Petitbon.
Parcells is one of the greats; I really can't see saying he's "overrated".
great to hear someone who respects a person for the accomplishment, not just bash the guy for coaching an arch rival. To say Parcells is over rated is just crazy. the guy is a great coach...period!

Good point. It just sucks having gotten back to the playoffs and then regressing so quickly. I have faith that Joe will get us back to the NFC Championship game - or more - next year.

I'm not bashing him for coaching an arch rival (although it doesn't help), I just think as of late he's been more of a showman than great coach. There's no denying he did a great job in New York (Giants and Jets) and New England. However, the press fawns all over him yet he hasn't won a single playoff game since 1998. For all of Gibbs stuggles thus far in his comeback attempt at least he's been able to win at least one!

For all you sensitive people out there I think both Gibbs and Parcells are two of the all-time great coaches the league has ever seen. Now you can stop whining about me being unfair to Mr. Parcells! Have a Happy New Year!

parcells is UNDERRATED,not overated.he's beaten gibbs more times than he has lost, even beat gibbs 3 straight games in 1986.the only reason you see him so much is because he plays for the cowgirls, and has a talking dummy for a boss!

Parcells is clearly over rated...the media is to intimidated by him to criticise him. He undresses the media in public every week...he has them all in line. He has accomplished less then Gibbs in one extra season in Dallas yet receives no criticism for it.
Gibbs by contrast is a mild mannered gentleman who talks down his own accomplishments and would never undress a reporter in public...this makes him an easy target.
