skinsfan69 12-10-2006, 07:28 PM JC shouldn't have forced that throw, but that's life with an inexperienced QB.
I thought that was a bad call. It was 3-9. Why call a 5 yard slant to a TE who was not going to get the first down even if he caught it? Should have called a 5 step drop.
dmek25 12-10-2006, 07:36 PM and call me crazy, but I don't think Gibbs called the "throw a pick for a touchdown" play. Looked like he called a quick slant on that side.
i thought the play calling was pretty good, but.... why run a QUICK slant to cooley? i love him to death, but quickness isnt the one thing he was blessed with.
redsk1 12-10-2006, 08:06 PM I'll be the first to call someone out for bad playcalling but today isn't the day. The reason we lost was mistakes and bad execution. On a positive note, we killed them running the ball today and have done a great job over the last few weeks. We're taking some lumps w/ a qb that's learning right now.
dgack 12-10-2006, 08:43 PM Thing is, I think these kind of games are exactly what JC and the team need. I'd rather them get it out of their system, improve, and learn those lessons that only come in moments of struggle and loss THIS season than next season when the slate is wiped clean.
Learning how to bounce back from a bad showing and come back the next quarter or week is a key trait of a great QB. Look at what happens to guys who win all throughout college and then come into the NFL and choke, it's like they never regain their footing, they're just reeling because they have all this pressure to not screw up.
I got stuck watching the Ravens game so I only caught the "high"lights, but that pickle that popped off Cooley's pads seemed fluky and it sounded like the ball bounced Philly's way a couple of times. We ran all over them, didn't get killed by Westy, and JC learned a bunch (without getting seriously hurt). What else can you really ask for at this point?
724Skinsfan 12-10-2006, 08:58 PM Are there still members of this board that still haven't realized that Saunders calls the plays? It's been 14 weeks and 13 games and yet we still endure "Gibbs play-calling sucks" threads.
Going for the FG was a decent move after the fact we didn't try to punch it up the gut with Duckett/Sellers. Kicking the FG and then relying on our D to give us another chance made sense to me given the fact that the Eagles had, what, 54 yards offense in the second half. JC moved the ball very well, especially in the second half. Hindsight makes it look like a bad decision. To me, though the bad decision started and ended with not running it straight forward on 1st/2nd/3rd and goal.
LongTimeSkinsFan 12-10-2006, 09:32 PM I didn't watch the whole game but I watched enough to know that 2 INTs got converted into TDs by the Eagles. Take away those 14 points and we walk away winners- plain and simple.
Longtimefan 12-10-2006, 09:44 PM 2 picks lost us ht egame today, not play calling
You're partially correct in that the two picks basically contributed to us losing the game. However, the latter pick was the direct result of what I would consider a bad play call. It was 3rd & nine, Campbell threw an inside slant pattern to Cooley, which even had he caught it, would not have been a 1st down, and we would have had to settle for another FG. Campbell being a young QB is trying to make the pattern that's called, but my contention is that we should have run a play beyond the 1st down marker, if it goes incomplete, then kick the FG.
dgack 12-10-2006, 09:47 PM my contention is that we should have run a play beyond the 1st down marker
Yeah, I've never understood the concept behind throwing short on 3rd down, but it happens so much that I always just figured the QB threw the ball early due to pressure. If the actual play call is to throw behind the marker and hope the receiver can get the extra yards, that just seems stupid.
Longtimefan 12-10-2006, 09:55 PM I'm not going to blame that play call on Gibbs, because I don't believe he called that play. We may have to chalk that one up to Al.
mike340 12-10-2006, 11:45 PM I agree entirely with the quoted post. (I think that the 3 runs strategy would have been the Gibbs call.)
I am sure that Saunders calls all the offensive plays, but something caught my eye.
We had the offense on the field, and there was a shot of Gibbs indicating that he wanted to see Saunders, and Saunders went to Gibbs as though he was shot out of a cannon. Did anyone else notice that? Is it possible that Gibbs is now telling Saunders the types of plays he wants to see for certain situations in a game?
... To me, though the bad decision started and ended with not running it straight forward on 1st/2nd/3rd and goal.
