5 yrs, 11 Million?

Wow, thats pretty cheap if you ask me. It also shows Betts likes Washington and wants to stay with the team. It could say that despite the crappy season, this team might not be too bad to be around after all.

It is cheap.
He could have easily made more in the free agent market.

We probably convinced him that he was already a vital part of the offense as a backup, and that would continue if he stayed.
Plus, who wouldn't want to play in front of the best fans, and franchise in football? :D

A good deal--we need the one-two (think Priest and Larry in KC), and it's nice to see us keep a guy instead of going outside. Plus, Ladell has run well the last few weeks. I'm still a bit worried about his durability, and we need to figure out short-yardage, given that this means no Duckett.

If Gibbs puts 5 running backs on the depth chart "again" next year.... God help us all.

That's really not that bad. I thought we would open our pocketbooks, but I am sure it is back loaded so he will only hit maybe 1 mil ish towards the cap next year. So he'll be around for 3 years or so, meaning we'll get the best of his career if Portis gets injured again. That's a cheap SOLID backup if you ask me. If Betts left next year, we would all be worried if Portis went down, now we don't have to.
Let's not forget, Betts is a great receiver out of the backfield.
It was a good move.

I don't like it, too much guranteed money for a guy who has a tendency to get hurt. Do you guys realize how much guranteed money is in this deal? Here is a short quote from ESPN:

"Betts, 28, signed a five-year extension Friday worth $11 million, but the key was in the early payout of the deal. He got $3.5 million in signing bonus money this year and a $2 million roster bonus in 2007. With half of the money going to him early, Betts figured it was the best of all worlds. "

I like Betts, but freakin 5.5 million in guaranteed money? C'mon, we have some pressing needs on defense.

Portis isn't going anywhere, let's just stop with that nonsense. Teams need two quality backs these days. Betts should see an increased load next year and with the banging Portis takes that's a good thing. Betts' deal is very cap friendly as well. Not sure where any negativity is coming from in that regard but oh well, some are never satisfied.

I disagree only from the standpoint that 5.5 mil in guranteed money for a guy who usually has injury problems is too much. I like him, just not at that price.

I still do not understand what could have possibly been going through the FO's mind when they decided to throw a 3 round pick at Duckett. Did they just decide to scrap the 2007 Draft altogether?

Makes me cautiously optimistic about the team. Signing could say something about the optimism inside the locker room. Hopefully we'll rally around it, and come into next season with some swagger.

Hopefully the Bett's signing pays off. I agree with the general consensus that it's a great bang for the buck. He's a solid back, a true redskins... etc. THOSE are the kinds of players that deserve bigger contracts. Not AA, or some other huge name free agents. Gotta give the front office a nod on this one.

Yep. This front office has made a commitment....a commitment to free agency. They simply do not have any talent in the scouting and drafting dep't, thus, the draft is not important to them.
