Betts could have been another Antonio Pierce waiting to happen. Besides if he goes, and Portis get's hurt again next year, who's next in line to carry the load?
Dude, I said I was with the signing, I just don't think he's all that good. I like the fact that they kept him. He's a decent back. He's just not great. I think he's staying where he should be at #2 on the depth chart of the Washington Redskins. I think if they gave him starter money, it's a horrible idea and might spell the end for Clinton here. However, if he got some decent money for being a backup, then it's a good deal.
As for Betts being a "better fit for Gibbs's system": Clinton is a better blocker and harder runner than Ladell Betts. He also gets in the end zone a lot more and fumbles less. Also, until this season, Clinton has stayed healthy far more consistently than Ladell.

I'm guessing a signing bonus of around $7 million. Just guessing though.
Good move. Keeps us from having to find a replacement. If we let him go, we would have been forced to sign a free agent for the same amount of money (if not more). Or use one of the few draft picks we have on a RB. And it's better to have continuity.
This shores up the RB position in DC for years to come. Now we can turn our attention to other spots like CB.

its only a good move if the skins are paying him like a top flight back up. hopefully, no more over paying
It was reported that he got a 7mil bonus. How many back-up rb's get a 7 mil signing bonus? Not too many if any.

Yeah but the term 'back-up' means different things for different teams. Some will go off the deep end and say that's too much, but if he's a starter somewhere else, will he get that kind of money? Probably so.

That's another really good point. It keeps Washington from getting a guy who they don't know how he'll adapt. They've seen what Betts can do in Washington and in the system and they decided he was worth keeping versus going out and signing another backup who may not have fit in or pined for a starting job. Very good point, the deal makes a lot of sense simply because it's keeping with what you know.
Also, I've been critical of them for not keeping role players. So, I like the fact that he's staying, I just hope this doesn't convince them that they could be fine without Clinton.

Is there ever a bottom to Mr. Synder's pocket? .. Good news.

Remember though that this summer Saunders said he envisioned using Portis and Betts together on the field a lot. I'm sure he's got a bunch of tricks up his sleeve for the two of them in 2007

Provided that Saunders is still here, you can 'Betts' your bottom dollar on some good things from these two next year.

Yeah right, like we all thought last year.. Blah, blah, blah...
What the team needs is a nice BBQ with family, team, and coaches so they can all get over their presonal issues with each other...
Maybe they should all be forced to spend Christmas together....

I hope so. And I hope Saunders stays too.
