Gibbs Ii In My View

I just wanted to take some time and pour my perspective into coach Gibb's second stint. There's been a lot of bitter tension between members over whether Gibbs should remain or go and it bothers me a lot.

First of all, I'm 34 and I remember very well all of those SuperBowl teams of the 80s. I remember very well the first SB title in 83 and the last one in 92. Is Gibbs the same great top NFL coach today that he was then? No, he isn't and no one should feel ashamed to admit that. He is indeed a different coach today. Coaches as well as players can decline in their abilities. Is Gibbs in my view completely done and now a bad coach? No way. As evidenced last year he can still lead a team. Has he made some personnel and coaching mistakes and miscalculated some decisions? Sure, nothing wrong to admit that either.

What Gibbs being here the second time around offers in my opinion is not so much a replay of exactly what happened his first time around but it's bringing what this organization has needed so badly since he has left. Gibbs is for the first time bringing in values of hard work, battling through adversity, practicing, remaining together as a team and hard offseason work to these players. This organization and many of these players haven't had that in their entire careers and that includes many free agents as well. Think of the atmosphere and attitude that we had under Spurrier and Turner. Schottenheimer to an extent brought what Gibb's is bringing now but Snyder made the mistake of not letting him stay to finish the job.

The results are not apparent now but what I do feel that what Gibbs is bringing to this organization in his second stint is a cultural change that will eventually take root in both the players and the ownership.

Bottom line is that this organization right now, these players need the stability and values that Gibbs implements. We have a coach unlike Spurrier and to an extent unlike Turner and Schottenheimer who deeply cares about the fan base, the organization and the town and not just getting paid. He has an attachment to this city that no other coach out there will ever have.

I firmly believe despite his mistakes that in letting Gibbs finish his contract that when he leaves as coach and either retires from football or goes to the front office that this organization will be better off from the players to the owner (who I think today is a better owner and person than before Gibbs came back). We may not reach a SB title but I do believe that the culture and course of the Redskins will change for the better in the future with him here for the duration.

I don't believe Gibbs changed at all. His knowledge, abilities, drive and perspective on the game are all solid. However, the game has changed a bit during his break from coaching. Free agency, salary cap, a lot of rules and even strategies (3-4 defenses now arising in favor of 4-3) have all given Coach Gibbs a learning curve in resuming his position as best coach in the game. He'll get back there, he just needs to adjust from what he had known his entire career before taking a vacation from it.

Gibbs would make a GREAT front office man for us. He seeks out players who won't disrupt the organization and play for the team more than themselves. As you can see from his benching of Lloyd for being a distraction, he puts the team first always. We'll never degrade into a Cowboys or Eagles-like mess while he's in charge.

He's had an amazingly difficult season, mainly through injuries and somewhat from assistant coach confusion witht he new Saunders system (that Gibbs seems to have scrapped for his old style of run-first ball) and no healthy players on defense (Archeleta bust too). If he had his usual dominant defense that we've had the past few seasons and all of his weapons on offense, we'd be calling him a genius instead of anticipating his retirement. However, we can take a lot of positives from this year thanks to Gibbs: Betts emergence as a top-notch runner IF we can keep him next year, Campbell's developement seems to have been handled perfectly and he'll be great in the future, we have some GREAT defensive reserves who will be great to have when the starters return from injury next year (Golston, Fox, even Jimoh).

I thank Gibbs for returning and getting our team back to it's traditions and making the future look very bright for us. The team was a DISASTER from Snyder's first few years (with Gibbs picking players and Snyder handling the contracts, we have a great management team) and the Spurrier experiment. We barely resembled the team we knew and loved. Now we do again, even if our record doesn't show it. We've had the WORST luck of any team I can remember in ANY sport this season, but we still have a lot to be excited about, even if we have to wait until next year to reap the benefits.

I hope you are right but so far I have not seen anything that leads me to believe that the organization is better now with Gibbs than ity was before. I think Gibbs still is a great coach, when he doesnt give his authority away to assistants, but as a personell evaluator I think he is terrible. The best thing Gibbs could do for the organization wuld be to convince Danny to hire a GM. If Gibbs does just that one thing than I may be convinced the team will end up better because of him coming back.

Gibbs was regarded as a great micromanager (in a good way). He was involved in every detail back in the first go around. I think this time he wants to be in charge but has decided to delegate more responsibilities to the coordinators and their coaches. Something's out of sync and he's going against his own grain. The catch is if he goes back to his micromanaging style he'll spend 22 hours at the office every day. Goodbye family, once again.

I would have to agree that Gibbs is still a great coach, motivator (proof of last years run). I dont agree that he will be a great front office person. I think the 3 years he has called the shots has been shaky. Some have worked out, but more have not. I dont put the blame on Gibbs for all the moves. GW is to blame for quite a few. (Champ, LaVar,Clark,Pierce,Smoot) all those guys were "replaceable" to him and I think our D has paid the price. Letting him pick his players is a big mistake for someone of his ego, where its the system not the players. I believe Gibbs understands that a GM is needed, NOT Vinny!! Gibbs is a great coach, but his GM skills seems to be in question. Talent evaluation is huge now a days and our 2nd day draft picks have been pretty lame. In the 3 years of Gibbs 2, I thought their may be more stability in player personel, but not really. We have had 3 starting QB's in 3 years. a rotation at the WR position, Defensive line, LB and our secondary has been a rotation of players. I dont care how much you spend, and what the expected production of players are when you bring them in. If you have no chemistry, or familiarity with the players you are playing with, your team suffers. As in the case this year.

Gibb's heart is still in it..........the players might be a different story

i am not one that has been calling for a gm. but i totally agree with the rest of this post. coach Gibbs still knows how to coach. the delegating of coaching duties doesn't work when the main man is also the smartest coach. i think the redskins would be better off with Gibbs calling the plays. sure, last year some of those games were brutal to watch. but, we were just one win away from being in the super bowl. i understand that our defense is a sieve this year. but winning football starts with the ground game. and with Gibbs, you will definitely get that
