As TAFKAS pointed out (http://www.thewarpath.net/257280-post60.html), he worked closely with his sons on the race team, so he did spend more time with the family. Plus I'm sure NASCAR wasn't quite the grind that the NFL was for him.

I thought his kids didn't join him for a couple years after he started NASCAR?

It appears you are right about J.D., he joined in 93, but wasn't president until 97. I misunderstood when he joined the Gibbs team.

It still doesn't change the fact that he was speaking of Coy growing a beard as to why he left to be with family.
But I guess I can see where people would think he was "with family" since he was with J.D. It's a weak argument at best though. There was much more to his family than just J.D. At least I can see your point though.

All that matters is that he's back. How many coaches retire and then return like he has??

Sorry, but I don't see how Coach Gibbs relating one story about his son equates to being his main reason for leaving. His medical issues played a huge part as well. He was having alot of problems due to lack of sleep and having persistent headaches and pain in his arms. After his diagnosis, he knew he couldn't continue as he had been. As far as his family goes, he began questioning the amount of time he was spending with them three years prior to his retirement when his own father passed away, at which point his father apologized to him on his deathbed for not being there for them as he should have been. Also, at that point in his career, he had been coaching for 25 years. He gave it all he had and had nothing left to prove. I just don't think you can find fault in him, whatever his reasons were, considering what he gave up for this team and its fans. The fact that he's chosen to do it all over again speaks volumns as to his character and his devotion to this organization.

Just to add, he was clearly burnt. He had Dick Vermeil syndrome at that point. Years of living football 24/7, sleeping in his office on cot, and being obsessed with football and winning took it's toll. He missed his family, he had won 3 Super Bowls, the guy had nothing left to give in his mind.

You're right Matty.

I'm currently reading the book "Hail Victory" and in the book where Gibbs talks about his father he says, "He wasn't there alot. I started thinking about those things. I thought how much longer do I have to enjoy those other things? After twenty five years of doing what I was doing, I was getting a little tired of doing the same thing."

To me, his decision to retire was completely understandable. For those of us who had the priviledge of witnessing his first tenure as coach it was very hard to let him go and it makes me so grateful that he chose to come back. He was, is and always will be the Redskins to me.

I'm not disputing that injuries are a part of the NFL.

I'm just saying they are a factor, a factor for every team. Some teams can fight through but it all depends on the severity of the injuries and what key guys are hurt.

Yeah, the injury to Prioleau is bigger than people realize. The reason is that when he went down, Archuletta was used to fill his spot. This small thing, combined with the loss of Springs is directley responsible for the losses against Minnesota and Houston. If we win those two we are at 6 and 6 and still in the hunt.

We beat Houston. You mean Tennessee.

That was like 15 years ago. Hold on a sec, I'll go through my newspaper archives and pull it out for you.

If you're old enough to remember, you remember. It was on sportscenter. When he left we were all shocked, but understood. When we found out he didn't spend time with family, he went to NASCAR, a lot of us were upset for not being honest. This is not opinion, but fact. All was forgiven when he came back, but you never know when he might do it again. So we need to enjoy his leadership while we have it.

Your comment of "does he owe us an explanation?" Of course not, but he offered one. He could have left for any reason in his own head, including burnt out or just don't have the spark anymore. No one would care. But don't tell us one thing and do another. However, he did cite health issues, and that was true...he should have left it at that.

Of course I was old enough to remember, we're both the same age. My physics teacher announced it in class that day. But, even you just now said that he cited health reasons in addition to his family. I do remember seeing the announcement of him retiring. I do remember that it was more than just his family that were reasons. It was his health and also being burned out. I really don't see where Gibbs lied to us and even if his reasons were not completely 100% authentic to the true reason for leaving, it isn't grounds for calling the man a liar.

But, like you said, we should be happy he is back now and trying to get this franchised turned around. Sure, we don't know when he might decide to leave. The guy does have diabetes and he is in his mid 60's. I believe if he decided to retire early, it would be because of his health and not because he can't get the job done.
