WT: Skins' Finishing Up With Rookies

No one knows when Washington Redskins rookie safety Sean Taylor will return to Redskin Park after he bids farewell this afternoon.

As the Redskins completed their second-to-last day of rookie training yesterday, coach Joe Gibbs conceded the sessions were held partly because of the uncertainty of rookie contracts.

"If a guy isn't signed, it's going to be a long time before we get a chance to look at him again," Gibbs said at a press conference to wrap up the offseason.

Taylor, the draft's fifth pick overall, is the only real danger to be absent when the team reconvenes in late July. Offensive lineman Jim Molinaro, a sixth-round pick, is signed, and talks for tight end Chris Cooley (third round) and offensive lineman Mark Wilson (fifth round) aren't expected to be difficult.

Although negotiations for high first-round picks generally don't begin until mid-July, it's tough to get those players in on time. Taylor doesn't have an agent after firing Drew Rosenhaus in the wake of the draft, and yesterday he declined comment as he exited Redskin Park.

Gibbs is optimistic, though, pointing to owner Dan Snyder's track record of paying generously for top players.

"I'd say in general, I don't worry about [holdouts], because Dan's heavily involved in that," Gibbs said. "We're known for paying fair dollar and getting it going. I think we'll have fewer problems than most other people."

Even under Snyder's ownership, the Redskins have had several rookie holdouts, the longest being quarterback Patrick Ramsey's 16-day absence in 2002. Ramsey ended up starting intermittently as a rookie but was unable to sustain his performance following an outstanding debut in early October.

Gibbs knows how a holdout can affect a team and a player, having dealt with Desmond Howard's squabble in 1992. These days the coach is wary.

"I learned a lot," Gibbs said. "We didn't take very many high draft choices in there toward the end of my tenure here the first time. We took one, and he came in late. He was pretty much out of shape. We gave him a ton of money. The team looks at him and says, 'This guy's not going to produce for us this year.' It's a mess. It's a nightmare."

Taylor's physical shape is one thing that has Gibbs upbeat. The rookie recently took the coaching staff's treadmill test and, according to Gibbs, performed well despite having just completed a workout.

"He's got a ways to go," Gibbs said, "but he did fairly well, and [the test is] pretty tough."

Anyone have the details of what the treadmill test involves?

pretty sure its a mile and they speed it up as you go... i took part in a heart study that was probably doing something similar, 20-40 minutes on a treadmill between 10-15 mph (depending on weight/conditioning etc)... its not really for endurance as much as making sure your heart rate isnt spiking (and thus, you're in shape).

Again, i wasnt doing the NFL version, but i figure its probably close.

From the Washington Times:

Players will be asked to run on a treadmill while their pulse is monitored. Gibbs recalled how, in his first stint with the club, two players of seemingly equal condition would be revealed as far different in the test.

"They start cranking that treadmill up, and your pulse rate is either going up or it's not," Gibbs said. "[Wide receiver] Gary Clark used to finish the treadmill test with his hands in the air, and he was laughing. I don't think his pulse ever got over 150. And bless his heart, poor Ricky Sanders [another wideout] was about 200 and almost died.

"You can't con [the treadmill test]. We'll know who's ready and who's making the commitment."

It'll be nice having a well conditioned team. Hopefully we'll reign over the 4th qtr this year and rack up a lot of stats there. Hoping they will just increase the margin of victory and not be comebacks. But Gibbs is the king of comebacks and halftime adjustments. I guess having his players in shape always aided in that effort.

I can remember last year how we used to fold in the 4th quarter ( especially the defense). We lost a lot of games because of that. This year hopefully it will be different..

Gibbs definitely won't allow his team to be sucking wind in the 4th quarter.

Isn't it amazing to finally have a coach that pays attention to every little detail?!

Spurrier's idea of a stress test is if practice runs too late and cuts into his tee time!

:laughing-

Spurrier.......just saying his name makes me chuckle. What a freaking joke. And to think that I was on the Spurrier bandwagon. Sad.....so sad.

yeah, i thought he could be alright too, then i saw everyone get excited while he ran up preseason scores and became a little confused... that and his going out and getting every gator in sight on the roster... *sigh*

Gibbs is a pro. He knows that because he's coming back after so long, teams will not be sure what to plan for. I'm sure he'll keep it pretty simple in the pre-season, so we have to remember that if we don't win games or look dominant. THe element of surprise is crucial in football, especially in Gibbs offense that uses the run to set up the big time pass play. I bet we'll see a lot of formation work (shifts, motions, etc.) and then relatively simple plays. In the regular season, those shifts will be to set up the big plays.

Also, I bet we won't be on full blitz mode until the regular season starts.

Smart move. Kepp it close to the vest, and keep em guessing. The less they enemy knows, the better.
