Strange as it may sound, it may have taken the Cowboys to spur change with the Redskins.
For Joe Gibbs to finally go with Jason Campbell at quarterback, one has to assume he has seen Cowboys coach Bill Parcells re-energize himself and his team since he benched veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe and turned to Tony Romo.
The Cowboys are 2-1 on the road since the change and Romo played not only well, but good enough to win in all three starts.
Gibbs also saw how well the Chargers have done with Philip Rivers in his first year as a starter. And it certainly didn't hurt Campbell's cause when a true rookie, Vince Young, led the Titans to a win over the Redskins a few weeks ago.
So don't look at this as Gibbs throwing in the towel for the season. He's too competitive for that, even at 3-6 with the road game against the Buccaneers up next.
Gibbs is trying to salvage the season. It's desperation time. And, yes, the side benefit is that Campbell gets experience for next season or the Redskins will have a better idea on whether they need to go get someone else to play quarterback beyond 2006.
