Cutting Archuleta & The Salary Cap

I do think cutting AA is a possibility (albeit an expensive one).

A post-June 1 cut would count $1.833M in 2007 and $7.167M in 2008. While that is a big deadcap hit to take in 2008 it wouldn't be the first time.

I've always theorized that the Skins allocate a certain percentage of their cap to deadcap each year. This year we had Lavar's $7.5M+ deadcap hit and a total of over $16M in deadcap. Last year we had Coles' $9M deadcap hit and nearly $20M in total deadcap.

Right now we have less than $1M in deadcap in 2007 and that just doesn't sound right for a Skins team. Even if we cut Arch and took his full $9M deadcap hit in 2007, we'd still be "ahead" of the game in Skins terms. Plus the salary cap keeps rising every year making the deadcap portion smaller in percentage terms.

Personally I hope they find some use for this guy. I wouldn't mind giving him a shot at LB (as others have suggested) since we are weak there and he can't cover anyways. But if he really can't fit here I think we should cut him next year, take the full $9M deadcap in 2007, and start rebuilding for 2008.

Good post. I agree that we should cut him next year, if he can't work out this year. I mean, he's going to take up cap space whether he's here or not ... may as well get someone who can at least start.

restructure usually means converting current or future base salary into signing bonus, which would only make things worse (cap wise). his base salary for his first three years is basically vet minimum anyways, so there's nothing to move.

and we can't shop him. his contract is horrible except as a 2 year vet min deal with a guarantee to dump him afterwards (instead of paying 4+mill a year) and having him have no real reason to play at all, money-wise. besides, he can't find a spot on the #30 defense and has been embarrassed weekly, so he has ZERO trade value.

CC: taking that big a hit might kill any chance to improve the team (ONE useful draft pick)... that's the problem with the credit car mentality though. It's always tempting to just keep pushing the payments down the road.

I agree, no one wants deadcap. But considering we currently have hardly any deadcap for 2007, I do think cutting AA is a possibility and probably wouldn't be the end of the world.

If the guy can't see the field on the 30th ranked D, what's gonna happen in 2-3 years from now? If there's no future with this guy let's cut him, take the hit, and move on.

That's bullcrap! I live in St. Louis. I can tell you for a fact, St. Louisans were laughing when the Skins paid Arch the bank. The concensus was that he couldn't cover and since his neck injury, he wasn't tackling aggressively anymore. I've repeatedly posted how this was a bad move. I only wish I had Gibbs and Snyder's phone number because when I first heard the rumor the Skins were going to sign Archuletta, I was screaming NNOOOOOOOOOOO! I wish I was wrong, but Arch is even more washed up than I thought.

It's like Bill Simmons says: every team needs a VP of Common Sense. If the Skin's FO had just talked to a group of St Louis fans they probably wouldn't have paid Adam Abercrombie so damn much.

However I do think trading him is a real possibility. Any team that traded for him would only be responsible for the salary portion of his contract. He'll make the vet min for 2007 and "only" $1M in 2008. Plus the acquiring team could cut him at anytime with no repercussions.

So from a financial standpoint I think AA is an attractive trade target. Of course there is also the football side of things and he might just be bad enough that no one wants him. But if we're gonna cut him anyways why not try to get something in return?

I like the idear of trading him, but you bring up a good point. Who wants him now? I mean maybe teams that are playing 3-4, and they could somehow utilize him. I am not sure if Chicago would want him anymore.

3-4s generally use bigger outside linebackers, not smaller ones.
