Gibbs: Duckett Will Carry on Short Yardage

Betts' history shows he's injury prone and he was a little nicked up at the time the TJ deal was made too. Now you're down to Rock who's ok in spot situations but we'd be in trouble if he had to be our starter week in and week out.


Betts always seems to have hamstring problems in camp. But again DO NOT give up a 3rd rounder for a guy who can only run straight ahead. How about doing what a good front office would do and work the waiver wire???? I bet there are PLENTY of RB's who were on the wire and could come in and help out playing a back-up role and help on teams.

Betts, Cartright and Sellers could have carried the load if Portis had to miss time. Look what happened to Green Bay last year? They lost all their RB's and Samkon Gado came in and ran the ball well. Carolina had two backs go down last year. Some 3rd string guy named Nick Goings comes in and plays well. You see it all around the league where guys get hurt and someone comes in and plays well. The trade was bad in hindsight and it was bad when they made it. You just can't panic when someone gets hurt and give away valubale picks. This is one of the reasons the team has no quality depth.



I agree with you 100% and said exactly the same thing in another recent post. The Duckett trade was a panic move that did not have to be made under the circumstances. Now if they resign Duckett to a modest contract before the FA period begins, then I may have second thoughts about it. The way it stands now,a trade like that "sucks" because there's not another GM in the league that would have made a move like that. Gibbs was about to make a simular move involving John Abraham during FA earlier this year when he though we may not get Andre Carter, that's why he found himself in the position of defending his position to the media earlier in the week about the way the FO does business. For all who think it was a good move, or the right one to make (if we don't resign Duckett), come draft day this spring, and we watch what would have been our 3rd round pick go to Atlanta (or someplace else depending on what they decide to do with the pick) we may have second thoughts as to the value of such a move.

I don't think they are going to resign him unless they franchise him. They will make him an offer but someone else is going to be able to pay him a lot more money. Someone like Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. So basically another draft pick down the drain.

The Skins are going to have to resign Betts or Duckett. Which one?

Honestly, I don't know. Betts is proven in the system, but we all know Duckett is decent too, even though I'd prefer the changed of pace back.

I really believe that TJ’s signing was the final blow to team chemistry before the season. Remember rock’s reaction? I think Gibbs had to show some loyalty to Rock & Betts to keep things cool. That & someone on Comcast said TJ was slow to learn the O.

Loyalty is important, but the goal is to win. I would imagine Joe wants to do anything to win - loyalty be damned. I also think that if ended up 10-6 and in the playoffs, loyalty would be the last thing us fans would be worried about.

You're entitled to believe that but given the fact the move was made it was obvious the coaches didn't see it as a panic move at that time.

When they made the move it wasn't clear how long CP may have been out, or if it was something that would linger or become a bigger problem down the road.

It was an insurance move, easy to say in hindsight that it wasn't needed but at the time I remember alot of people here applauding the move.

Yeah but we weren't looking for backup/teams type of player, they wanted a guy who could step in and carry the load full-time if needed, not some waiver scrub.

Exactly, and rumor had it that the reason they signed him in the first place was they were afraid he may go to Philadelphia and have to be concerned with defending him. Now I can understand your having that kind of respect for a RB, but not to the tune of a 3rd round pick. There is no scenerio where you stand to win in this situation. We loose all the way around.
