Phillip Daniel, Reynaldo Wynn, Mark Brunnel, and John Hall equals 9.3 million in freed up cap space. They all suck. Does anyone think they will be around next year? For them to retain the guys they have, they have to let some go. These are the most likely candidates. All are shoe ins, except Daniels. Fauria, gives us another million. This will provide us with the room to sign our draft picks. I dont think much else. It does'nt make sense to get rid of Archuletta until 2009. I hope that three weeks from now the Redskins are 4 and 5, and we can stop talking about next year. If the season go bad, it is time to start to build thru the draft. Who ever is making our draft choices and walk on free agents, has done a good job. Just look at Bailey, Smoot, Peirce, and Clark.

A. Find out if Gibbs is coming back so we can deal with he coaching situation. I prefer Williams which means it probaby won't be him.

B. Clean house in the scouting department. The Archeletta thing is a disaster. Somebody wasn't watching the store.

C. Come up with a five year cap plan that will begin to get us out of this yearly debacle of extending and overpaying and finagling. How severe we should be will depend on how soon we:

D. Find out about Jason Campbell. If he's a Schuler then it's time to blow the bridge.

Get a top notch free agent pitcher, the Red Sox just aren't going to get back to the series....oh wait...
1- QB, QB, QB! If we don't let Campbell have his chance this year, there is probably a reason the Skins chose NOT to play him. Let's finally get a marquis qb.
2- fix the CB woes. Archuletta is a bad move, but if we had some coverage in the secondary we could utilyze him as a run stopper.
3- for the love of pete, get a damn pass rusher.

That is all.

Here's a question for you guys. I'd say the odds are 90-10 that Brunell won't be back next year and I'll say 80-20 that Collins won't be back. So anyhow, assuming Campbell is our guy next year who is the backup?

Do we draft someone we can groom? Or, considering Campbell will essentially be a rookie, do we go after a veteran QB with playing experience. Some possibilities Jake Plummer (I don't like him personally), Chris Simms (if he's not back in Tampa, I think he'll look to start somewhere else), and here's an intriguing one Byron Leftwich (would bring him back home)

Anyway, I don't like thinking about next year yet but I am curious who might be our backup QB. What do you all think?

I don't like any of the veteran options you mentioned, so I'd go with grooming. In case you haven't noticed, only the Cardinals have a worse record than the skins, that means a high draft pick.

I don't think the backup is a big deal because Jason will be solidified in the starters' role at that point, barring an unlikely deep Brunell playoff run this season. I think you go the veteran route for the backup and preferably someone with some mobility because all you need is a guy who can win a key game if Jason is hurt. Not a great QB in the long run.

I think Todd Collins will be back next year. Maybe even as the no. 2 guy.

The lions, 49ers, Bucs, Raiders, Texans, Titans, Steelers, Dolfins, Browns, Bills are all 2-5 or worse so we would probably be looking at a top 10 draft pick at the moment.

Changes I would make are pick up a DE through the draft and look for Nate Clements through FA.

Give the reigns to Cambell. Stick with him despite what the fans say

Re-sign FA Betts, Dock and Cooley.

Take a long hard look at the left hand side of the defence and the LB corp in particular see how to solve that.

continuity and chemistry are 2 big players in the NFL. if Campbell is the starter, then Collins has to come back. as far as Wynn, hall, brunell, and Daniels, see ya later. if Campbell isn't the starter, i wouldn't be opposed to leftwich, but all his injuries scare me. no way to plummer. and our defense needs a pass rusher, has for years. one pass rusher automatically equals better pass defense

Start Campbell soon. Draft a DE and cornerback. We need to look hard at a quality backup QB. Not Plummer. Maybe Leftwich.

Well, we know one thing, we won't be doing much in the draft.

We'll need to trim some fat off the roster and that will involve dumping some of the over 30 crowd.

I guess we'll have to be aggressive in free agency again because what draft picks will we even have?
