As far as the D goes, the problem seems incresingly obvious to me each week. The way GW builds his defense, it's built around a strong front 7. What he desires to do with his secondary is to use them in creative ways, thus he demanded we go out and draft the physical speciman that was Sean Taylor, and sign Adam Arculetta. The Corners are physical run stuffers despite conventional NFL defenses who prefer smaller, quicker, cover corners, thus the drafting of Carlos Rogers. The secondary has been under a lot of fire this year for giving up big plays. But Gregg Williams has and has always had an expectation for his front seven to dominate the line of scrimmage, allowing him to twist his coverage using the personel he has to throughly confuse the opponent. That's at least what happened the last two years. All of a sudden this year, we add a less physical defensive end and lose our physical linebacker, Arrington, and there is a gaping hole in the front seven. You add to that injuries to Griffin and Saleve'a, and Philip Daniels aging right before our eyes every week, and it's no wonder we are getting beat each week. Now rather than being on the attack, the secondary is on the defensive. And all those DBs have major flaws in their game that even the weakest NFL offenses are exploiting. Arculetta and Rogers are getting the brunt of it, but it's not like these flaws were just recently discovered. Williams had to take the good with the bad to get the physical abilities that he covets. This whole defensive problem is a product of GW's all or nothing defensive scheme. They either dominate the game, or they get dominated. And right now, the front 7 is playing average football. And in our scheme, average isn't good enough. Because we have a bunch of physical tools in the secondary who aren't the best cover guys (by design), who are getting picked apart.

The only quick fix I can see is to replace Holdman on the weak side. If Rocky is ready, play him. If he isn't, go somewhere else. Posey or somewhere. Or move Andre Carter back to LB, start Wynn or Evans at DE, and use Carter's skills to rush the passer. Because, right now at end, he's getting beat up in the run game, and is pretty mediocre in the passing game, and its killing the defense. Either way, something needs to be done to the front seven quickly.

This is just terrifying (from a long article (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/29/sports/playmagazine/1029play_parcells.html?pagewanted=3&_r=2) on Parcells with some comments on the Redskins):

"Referring to Al Saunders, Parcells says: “This other guy, I think, he’s a lot more indiscriminate. I think he’s not going to be as concerned about the effect on his defense.” In other words, the Redskins’ defense will pay the price — in time spent on the field, in fatigue — for Saunders’s disinterest in controlling the ball and the clock."

how bout:
"Parcells points out Redskins right tackle Jon Jansen. “This is Jansen getting pushed back,” he says. “He doesn’t look like the player he was a couple of years ago.” The right side of the Redskins’ line seems to have trouble with twists. If Newman can cover Moss long enough, Jansen won’t be able to hold off Greg Ellis or Marcus Spears, the Cowboys’ pass rushers he has to block."

I certainly hope the Redskins are using this as bulletin board material

or worse yet:

" The Redskins’ offense suddenly looks less like the handiwork of their head coach, Joe Gibbs — whom Parcells has faced 20 times over the years — than of Al Saunders, the associate head coach for offense the Redskins poached from the Kansas City Chiefs in the off-season. Parcells moves on to examine the 2005 Chiefs. “If you can just understand what they’re about, a lot of other things follow,” he says. “It’s like finding a common denominator in mathematics.” What the Chiefs have long been about — and what the Redskins are newly about — is exploiting the width of the field. Their running game tends to avoid the inside, or the middle of the field; it’s built instead on sweeps and reverses. Their passing game has a lot of quick screens to the outside. And before every snap there’s a lot of running around. “One of the worst things you can do on defense is be a reactive defense,” Parcells says. “You can’t worry about what they’re doing. All that shifting, all that movement before the snap, is designed to get you worried about what they’re doing. They don’t want you to get a good fix. They don’t want you to stare down for 10 seconds. They want to create indecision.”

looks like the indecision is on us.

I can't believe all the people that support snyder............Did you know he charges $15-20 in parking at six flags!!!! another thing that irks me is the low quality of the food at Fed EX, considering the impressiveness of the stadium. Those two things should be enough to anger you guys.

Problem with snyder is that he's not savy enough to make his own decisions, (leading, not following) He's learning every year from his mistakes. Has he ever heard of benchmarking, doing things the way that other owners did them in the past, therefore he has no idea how to be an effective OWNER, (not businessman, there's a difference). Why are skins fans proud of our 90,000 person stadium and absurdly unnecessarily high revenues, and "squeezing under the cap" The two teams with the best records in their conferences the last 5 years were pats and eagles, the two teams furthest under the cap.

Your really trying to tell me a Billionaire who took over the Redskins and made them the Highest grossing sports franchise in the United States is not Savvy enough, come on. I have no problem with having an owner that gives his coach everything he wants, or would you rather have an owner like the Cardinals. Why is it fun to bash Snyder about how much he charges to park and come to games, most of that money goes right back into the team, trust me Snyder does not need your money. Im damn proud to be able to go to the biggest and one of the loudest stadiums in the league, it has definately got better since Gibbs came back and when that stadium rocks you cant hear anything. And actually football is a business my friend, and what some dont seem to understand is that in the world of business men, like Danial Snyder, the goal is to make money, and I dont think hes that bad of an owner if he can take a team that has been pretty bad even before he took over and still make them a cash cow. Stop the Snyder bashing, he does not wear a uniform, he doesnt miss tackles.

We're not fans of the business, we're fans of the team. And the team is in deep trouble. Every problem the Redskins have had since the change in ownership has been "solved" by buying something (including coaches). Snyder may be good at transactions (getting Gibbs is still potentially his high point), but he's not good at developing a football team.

It worries me that he can go to bed at night feeling not so good about the team but feeling great about the business he's running.

From a cap and contract perspective I could see the following cuts:
Brunell - his salary jumps to $6.633 in 2007, Andre Carter in 2008 when his salary jumps to $5 million, unless a restructure occurs one has to take notice of Cornelius Griffins contract - it jumps to $6.166 million in 2007 and with his injuries that is a lot of money tied up in one player, Shawn Springs contract jumps to $7.3 million in 2007 - cutting him and signing Clements makes sense in 2007. Finally David Patten jumps to $3 million in 2007 so he is also a cap cut too I would think.

Bill B, all of the players that you are sugesting we release would cost us more to release than to keep. The players that make sense to release are the ones that I stated in the begginning of this post. Go to the salary cap section and look at the subtitle release fees. We cant even think about releasing any of the free agents we signed this year until 2009.
