Monkeydad 10-30-2006, 02:06 PM First, while I appreciate the thought of this thread, I am not - repeat not - ready to give up on this year yet. It's tough sledding but maybe, just maybe we can go 8-1 or 7-2 and make it in. Not counting on it, but not giving up either.
Second, get Clements, start Campbell and draft lineman, defensive and offensive (yes, I know we don't have much in the way of draft but, what we have should be spent on getting younger and better along the lines).
It's easier to find good linemen later in the draft. With positions like QB and RB, there's a few elite picks and then the quality drops off dramatically. With linemen, there are guys with size and work ethics all throughout the draft who can be made into a blocking monster even if they have some weaknesses to work on. Tony Mandarich, Tony Boselli and Brian Jozwiak showed why you shouldn't take a offensive lineman with a top pick.
memphisskin 10-30-2006, 02:07 PM The Skins look like Rocky in Rocky III, only without having achieved any of the things that Rocky did. Point of fact, they've lost their Eye of the Tiger. They need to hire Apollo Creed to take the whole team to some crappy gym on the coast full of young football players with the eye. Then they need to run windsprints on the beach in shorts so short they'd make Paris Hilton blush. Throw in Mrs. Gibbs screaming "You can't win" (or was that in Rocky IV?) and we've got a SB title in '07.
Beyond that, some patience wouldn't hurt. Instead of getting all dreamy-eyed over some free agent signee, lets instead put some money back into our scouting department. I'd love to see us develop some players, like Kedric Golston, instead of constantly calling someone else's trash our treasure (Archuleta). It's a little hard to build chemistry when you're constantly re-arranging the core. Settle on the core guys, surround them with young, hungry players, and draft younger, hungrier players to push them.
Longtimefan 10-30-2006, 02:37 PM I think we are assuming Quinn will be #1, but I just don't see it. I guess we'll know more in the offseason. There are always a plethera of talent in the top 10.
Someone started a thread on this guy a few days ago, what happened to it?
How we're going to pay a first round pick is more important than who we're going to pick. Knowing this FO and their disdain for DP, anything relevant to same would be truly speculation. This current roster has to visit the knife before we can think about signing anybody.
irish 10-30-2006, 02:40 PM Here's a question for you guys. I'd say the odds are 90-10 that Brunell won't be back next year and I'll say 80-20 that Collins won't be back. So anyhow, assuming Campbell is our guy next year who is the backup?
Do we draft someone we can groom? Or, considering Campbell will essentially be a rookie, do we go after a veteran QB with playing experience. Some possibilities Jake Plummer (I don't like him personally), Chris Simms (if he's not back in Tampa, I think he'll look to start somewhere else), and here's an intriguing one Byron Leftwich (would bring him back home)
Anyway, I don't like thinking about next year yet but I am curious who might be our backup QB. What do you all think?
If they bring any of the QBs you mention here to DC they wont be as back ups.
WVU SkinsFan56 10-30-2006, 02:58 PM for what its worth, i would also like to see us pick up clements in free agency. as far as the draft goes there i dont really think that there is much cb talent this year. there are basically 2 guys, leon hall and marcus mcaulley. hall is great against the run but is kinda slow and i dont think he will be that great in coverage. mcaulley has all the physical tools but he is from fresno state and hasnt played that great of competition. if we get a top 5 pick i dont think i would feel comfortable using it on someone from fresno state. if we do get a top 5 pick does anyone else think we should take a look at paul posluszney???? he is a freek and can play both middle and outside lb.
My bad, I misunderstood your post.
I guess you're seeing what I am seeing out of McIntosh too eh? (nothing to this point)
Yep, hard to say much about him when he's not playing.
Hopefully down the stretch this season we'll see him get a chance to play.
CPDAMAN 10-30-2006, 03:08 PM Everybody in Washington is complaining that we have thrown away the future with free agents and all anyone wants to do is bring in more. Clements, Leftwich, we dont have the cap room for anyone unless we mortgage the future some more. We dont need a whole lot that we cant get in the draft. We have a first round pick and a few more. Its time to stop looking to fill all the holes with what everyone percieves to be superstars. Look at the Patriots, they have two rookie tackles playing for them right now, and recievers that no one ever heard of. With all that, they are 5-1. We on the other hand have the highest payed left tackle and he let Freeny molest Brunnell. They dont go out every year and buy a bunch of players that they think they will fill a whole, they develop them. We have enough super stars, now we need some more players like Ryan Clark. So for all of you that have a post that say we need to sign this guy and that guy, you are just recommending that they keep doing what the Redskins have been doing. All of our free agents from 2006 sounded great on paper. Look at them now.
The Zimmermans 10-30-2006, 03:14 PM I'm crazy, so don't listen to me.......but if the season proves bust, it is obviously rebuilding time, considering the state of our defense. I would liquidate what we can..... meaning trade away our most appealing of players. Trade Santana moss for picks, trade betts for picks, trade sean taylor for picks, trade marcus washington, Chris Samuels for picks. I know these guys are the face of the franchise, but we arent gonna get S*(&*^*)(*&)(&^)*(&^ for anyone other than them. Then I would use these draft picks for a QB, D-Line, and O-line nothing else. I prefer Chad Henne to run saunders offense, i think he has the tools. I think we are in a deep hole right now, and it'll be tough to dig ourselves out with our current cap situation, so liquidation would be the quickest solution.
However, we could always turn things around this season. I know this is unrealistic.

Ummm yeah you are crazy. We couldn't afford to trade everyone away both from a talent standpoint and from a cap standpoint. We'd have to eat a ton of cap hits from trading the guys you outlined.
I think we will need to make some tough decisions with guys such as Springs, and frankly I think it's time to reshuffle the D a bit and bring in some fresh blood, but we can't just blow up the entire team.
With the talent and coaches we have, we'll fine tune and give it another shot.
Longtimefan 10-30-2006, 03:20 PM I've said it time and time again, and you are exactly right in what you're saying CPDAMAN, I just wish we could convince the FO of the same thing. No matter how many times we say it, some just continue to think that FA hunting is the solution. Pipe Dream.
