0421kidwell 10-24-2006, 07:00 PM Do i dare compare the two seasons? Let's compare 1999 skins go to playoff's and win a game. Next they were one play away from going to the nfc title game. 2005 they went to the playoffs then came up short a couple of plays from going to the nfc title game. Then the ugly, over spending for players we had no business getting. The similatires of the 1999 and 2005 teams is they had character and heart. They didn't have the best players they had the rights players. Chemistry?? The 2006 and 2000 teams had neither??? Over spending killed us again.
SKINSnCANES 10-24-2006, 07:59 PM good points, but you could easily say we overspent in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 as well...
As a side note, does everyone remember when Spurrier and Synder go all the Jets (coles, thomas, morton, hall), Washington, and the others, then said we are spending a lot this year for our team of the future. And how it was a long term plan and stuff...
Then this year...Gibbs said he will prove that what he paid for our signings this year is cheap after you see their results and what players of their caliber will be asking for in a few years.
So we pay a lot not so they are a good deal later. Its still early on these new guys, I have faith...but God do I hope they start to prove themselves more...
We might suck right now...but we do have building blocks for next year. Itd be nice to have the same system two years in a row for the first time in 15 years too..
djnemo65 10-24-2006, 08:29 PM I just wonder where all these threads were prior to the start of the season. I seem to remember the consensus being here and elsewhere that we were a few big time playmakers on offense on pash rushers on defense away from being at the top of the heap. So we went out and added those players. This wasnt signing Mark Carrier or Bruce Smith, over the hill veterans, for their name recognition. We were continuing our strategy of signing young free agents entering the prime of their careers. Clearly our moves this year have been disastrous, but was going out and not doing anything an option? We would have killed the front office of they had done that as well.
It bothers me more when these phony prognosticators act like they knew all along that our offseason moves where superfluous and wouldnt work, when in fact, they lined up to pick us to contend for the NFC. Give me a break.
If you look at the core players on this team, most have been acquired through trade or free agency. Moss, Portis, Thomas, Washington, Griffin, Springs. Our philosophy has been to sign free agents entering the prime of their careers, and nobody had a problem with this when we were winning.
Moreover, with the exception of Arch, the problem has been with the performance of the players we already had and the unit as a whole. If we didnt have Lloyd or Arch or Carter do you think we'd be better now? I don't.
I mean come on, Ryan Clark wasnt THAT important, was he?

Awesome post. I couldn't agree more.
On offense I don't think anyone can really be disappointed with ARE or Lloyd. You can debate whether we overpaid in both cases, but personally I've liked what I've seen from both. Our offensive problems are due to the Oline and/or Brunell, not the guys we brought in.
Unfortunately it looks like we really f***ed up on D this year, and that's why I put most of the blame for this season on GW and/or the defensive scouting dept.
Carter hasn't generated any pass rush as hoped. Arch was brought in to bolster the run D, but I think GW overestimated our talent (and durability) in the secondary, and when Springs and Prioleau went down it killed us. Taylor's never been great in coverage. Rogers was left exposed and showed his weakness in coverage. Wright and Rumph have been disasters. I never thought I could miss Stoutmire so much.
Holdman is one year older and three years worse. And Rocky can't even take his job, which doesn't bode well for his future. Then in a must-win against Tennessee, Griffin and Salavea go down and Henry rips apart our rookie replacements for 180 yards.
Basically this is a very thin D, and a couple key injuries really showed it. But if you're putting all your eggs in Springs' health then something is wrong at the outset. We went from cap hell to cap heaven with the new CBA, we had money to bring in key players to bolster an already solid D, and we blew it big time.
That Guy 10-25-2006, 04:43 AM i believe this has already been mentioned, but whatever. and dj, plenty of people thought we should have kept clark and we overpaid in the offseason, at least for 2 of the players.

Yeah, including me. But I don't remember alot of people saying that Lloyd and Carter, or Saunders for that matter, were unecessary additions. It was part and parcel of a larger personel strategy that seemed to be working.
My point is that, to signal our offseason acquisitions as the source of this team's problems is wildly delusional.
And yo Canuck, thanks for the props. I don't know if I ever mentioned this to you, but good job with the cap sheets :)
dmek25 10-25-2006, 07:31 AM i wanted to keep Clark, but even if he was still here, the defense would still be a mess. someone missed big time with carter. if you are going to play end in this league at his weight, somewhere along the line you have you try and be a speed rusher. i see him locked up with offensive lineman all the time

and i don't see why. they blew up the chemistry, saunders hasn't called plays well, and the new players haven't been gamebreakers (not to mention they hurt our cap by underperforming). yeah, injuries hurt, and people aren't playing well, but we're not doing what we were when we were winning last last (max protect, shotgun, audibles, running portis more than 14 times a game, lots of two TE/I form and very little else).
dmek25 10-25-2006, 09:11 AM didnt priest holmes set a recoed for most carries in a season? and even if he didnt, i know he carried more than 14-15 times a game. i dont know why saunders refuses to run portis
LongTimeSkinsFan 10-25-2006, 09:44 AM I think there is such a thing as making too many changes too soon. Football, more than any other sport is a team sport and success is dependent not only on everyone doing their job, but also everyone knowing what their teammate is doing. I think maybe bringing in all these new people, especially a new OC and expecting everything to click instantly is unrealistic at this point.
The biggest difference between this year and last is, as many people have already stated, our defense has been exposed as being very thin. Our season may have a totally different outlook right now had Springs and Prioleau been healthy along with our D-line.
