2-5 at the bye: time to make changes

At 2-5, it is time for the whole organization to realize that it is time to rebuild. There are no quick fixes as far as the defence goes. I am not big Warrick Holdman fan, benching him for Rocky, is not going to turn around the 'D'. This team has too many holes to fill, I cannot recall what post, or thread, but someone mentioned that the lines need to be rebuilt, and I agree, with that sentiment whole-heartedly. As much as I hate to admit it the Cowboys and Giants have gotten it right, Dallas rebuilt there defensive front seven through the draft, and the Giants have built their O-line through the draft. It goes without saying that the Eagles have it right, in that their team is soundly built through the draft.

It is hard to say just what exactly is the problem with the Redskins, this season's inconsitent play and the penalties are particularly frustraing as fan, since this is not the type of play, one would expect from a team of Joe Gibb's 'Redskins' and character guys. I think Thomas Boswell, of the Washington Post, was on to something with his column this morning, when he questioned the heart of the team. Boswell mentioned,

"Some of us remember Gibb's old teams up close, and how they carried themselves in the tunnel before a game, responded to the challenges to start the second half and even how furious their faces looked in a losing locker room. Any resemblance between these Redskins and those Redskins is purely coincidental."

Time and again we see threads about how 'talented' the Redskins are, and how can such a 'talented' team have this type of record. These various threads over the years about how 'talented' the Redskins are yet their performance has not been the same, is the defining mark of the SnyderSkins. Because like Boswell, I remember those teams, I grew up watching those teams and I suspect that is why I still like this team and root for it. It is difficult to watch the team not do well with Gibbs as the coach, having witnessed those glorious teams that won three Super Bowls.

On the postive side of things, Skins fans have a short memory (both for good and bad events). The sins of the past will be forgiven when progress (real or imagined) is seen. That having been said, as already stated, 2007 season starts today. All the usual changes beginning with JC are implemented. Use the remaining season to evaluate the +'s, and -'s of the 2006 offseason, and what options are available. Evaluate the players and coaches, age, effectiveness, contracts, etc., and who needs to go or stay and what can be done about it. What works and what doesn't. Now the hard part................make it happen!
ONLY 10 MONTHS TO PRE-SEASON!

With 5 losses I think it's safe to say the playoffs are out of the picture barring an epic turnaround.

Not that I think it's going to make a dramatic difference this year, but I think it's time to start Campbell and start building towards next year. We need to get an idea if this kid can play. Let him take his lumps and get some game experience.

Get some of the youngers guys in there too like McIntosh.

I agree, and the whole idea is not whether he'll make a drastic difference, but whether this guy can actually play at this level. The sooner we find out the better. He may not be the answer at all, we may still have to look elsewhere for the solution, but we can use these nine games to guage where we're at with Jason. Gibbs continues to say Brunell gives us the best chance to win, but the question remains, to win what? None of us have seen Jason play with the first team unit, and until I do, I'm going to put all my opinions on hold.

DirtBagZ went into this but I want to look at it further. The heart that this team seems to be putting into each side of the ball is ridiculous. I see guys out there just going thru the motions. No matter how bad Brunnel maybe, if guys were putting more into it, we would have a winning record.

I don't know what's gone wrong with the nasty D from last year, and I don't know why the O just can't get some core plays and work together, but I think it has to deal with the heart and motivation of this team.

My solution? Well, for the rest of this year, no one is automatically granted a starting position. You work hard in practise and you get a spot. You don't, you won't. That should show the coaches who wants to be here, who out of the new group signed are core guys, and it will humble a lot of the players who are overpaid.

Apart from heart, I really think this team thought that everything would be handed to them after last year. They probably thought that they deserved to reach the playoffs this year, and that has also affected them.

Just my 2 cents

remember lavar? that's kinda how most teams work, but the talent divide between starters and backups is generally so great, that you just can't start whatever crappy player is working harder in practice.

i hate joe gibbs and how oblivous he is.

if you say you've got all this confidence in campbell why not put him in, he is the 'future' as they say. if we lose 1 more game and they don't put in campbell, i will flip

That right there is the problem, there are a whole bunch guys on this team have told about how 'talented' they are, but just how talented are you when you are 2 - 5? As far as I am concerned there is zero talent until you put up some wins. Guys getting a bye, or a pass, because they are 'talented' is what has this team in the mess that it is in. It is amazing how a team is less than the sum of its parts.

Look at the NO Saints for crying out loud, aside from Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, Joe Horn, and Deuce McCallister can name any other Saints? Wilbon said it today in his column the Saints hit and tackle and play with an intesity that the Redskins could only dream of. In part it is because too many people have told these guys how great and talented they are. If you are 2 -5 and supposed to be a playoff contender then you are bunch of bums.
