What about the OT throw to win the game against Jax?

He went down the field into coverage and took the chance that we all wish he would do more often.

I'd say that was making a play.

That was a good throw, but it was Moss on that one more than it was Brunell. That throw got there with good zip, which was nice to see. It got there before Deon Grant could close. The throw was high, in a spot only Moss could get it.

But it was only a 15 yard throw. From there, Moss did the rest, slithering away from Grant and taking it all the way.

Last time Brunell really did something to pull a game out of thin air was against Dallas last year in Week 2. Moss got deep, and Brunell made two tremendous deep throws.

Brunell always has a special place in my heart for that game. And I think he can do it again. But I like Drew Brees' chances to pull off heroics like that a lot better. (PS Disclaimer still stands, that move would have made no salary cap sense.)

Brunell is solid and is not the reason that the team had problems against the Giants. I guess I'm just daydreaming about what it would be like to have Tom Brady or Drew Brees. But that's pointless and I need to snap out of it. We're better off trying to solve problems elsewhere rather than worrying about the QB. Brunell is the best option we've got right now, all we can do is sink or swim with him.

really Matty, i guess i mean more. don't play it so safe that our defense has to hold the opponent to 14 points or less

Instead of Drew Brees, I'm curious to see what Campbell has in regular season games before going out and signing a QB. I personally feel Brunell doesn't have the type of arm that can beat you down field, which means everyone is playing a cover 2 shallow vs us. It comes to if we can block the 4 guys rushing and find underneath stuff. The problem with this, is even when the line does hold, there's little open, and Brunell doesn't have to zip to go over top of the defense. This is a liability to us, previously it wasn't up to our offense to win games, but now it is. Our defense is struggling and they need our offense to put up points to make their job easier. The second we make a team one dimensional, the closer that is to a big W.

That pass was also, predictably, to the sideline. where Jax defenders knew Brunell throws and were in two positions to make the INT. you heard Gibbs say that wasn't the ideal place to throw the ball (makes you wonder why they even ran the route then)

Moss attacked that ball and slipped out of double coverage, HE was the playmaker on that play.

one of these days brunell will " make a play" well, maybe

Or there was the comeback win in Dallas last year. I'd say that was making a play or two.

C'mon I know it's hard but you have to at least give the guy some credit for having the sack to make that throw. Yes Moss made the play, but Brunell made a ballsy throw. Moss gets the majority of the credit there, but I tip my hat to Brunell. I wish he took more chances like that.

Just a general comment here, there seems to be this misguided notion that throwing deep beats a cover 2.

That's not true.

To beat the cover 2 you need attack the gap between the safeties in the middle of the field.

Hitting the vulnerable open spots in the zone will break a team out of this coverage.

Simply trying to go deep is playing right into the strength of this coverage.

Apparently, those five minutes of football solidified him as the starter for the rest of his career, no matter how inconsistent he plays. How many sub par performances does he get for one miracle comeback in two and a half seasons?

Somehow we managed to get to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. He must have done something right along the way.

It's worth noting that as a team we have been wildy inconsistent... but I'm sure that is somehow all his fault.

Of course the defensive problems aren't his fault, but putting up three points(six if Hall makes the field goal) basically means the defense has to play lights out in order to win the game. So yes, the team has been inconsistent as a whole, but his performance (100 passing yards...) is almost entirely his fault.
