I should have proof-read my own comment. Just another Manic Monday. I wish it were Sunday (before 1:00pm).
hail_2_da_skins 10-09-2006, 04:15 PM Throwing a pass on third and one yard was dumb. Not going for it on fourth down was dumber. Dumb and Dumber.
Here is why I would have tried to run it twice in that situation. First of all, your defense had not stopped the Giants from driving all day, its a shootout. If your offensive line cannot produce one yard in two tries, you deserve to lose. You have one of the best backs in football, use him. What happened to the short yardage back (T. J. Duckett) that you gave away next year's third round pick for? Most coaches would have went for it in that situation.
Beemnseven 10-09-2006, 04:48 PM I'm sorry chris but I would hate to have you as a coach. At the time Hall missed that FG there was still 1:14 left in the 3rd quarter. It was only a 42 yarder and would have brought us within 10. TAKE THE POINTS every time when you are in that situation. If Hall makes that we only need a TD and another FG to tie. If you go for it and dont get it then you would still need 2 TDs to win, not to mention you now have nothing to show fora very productive drive. You cant honestly say it was a bad coaching desicion, can you?
1) Can your kicker make that?
A: Yes, the fact that he missed is awful, but hindsight is always 20-20. Hall is a very good kicker and I would think of that as an automatic 3. Scoring some points may have given the redskins some much needed momentum, and could have potentially changed the game
Yes, it was a bad coaching decision, and if Hall makes it, it's still a two-score game in a contest where your offense is struggling anyway. It's not as simple as "TAKE THE POINTS" anymore with John Hall. 42 yards for him is not automatic like it was 5 years ago. You have nothing to show for a productive drive when you miss a field goal too. One yard was all they needed -- one stinking yard.
Outside runner or not, Clinton Portis is supposed to get you one yard when you need it. Even if you think Portis isn't the right guy for 4th and 1, then why did they bring in T.J. Duckett?

Agreed, I was driving in my car back from NC and I started cursing, what the hell are we doing, Portis can get ONE yard. Going for the FG was pointless too. Okay so if Hall makes it (definitely not a chip shot for him) we're down 6-17 with a full quarter to play. The Giants had just had an 8 minute drive that led to a touchdown, and were quite capable of putting together another 5+ minute drive and at least getting a FG, leaving us down at the MINIMUM two more scores with not a whole lot of time left in the game. The coahes made a terrible call, and we paid the price for it, simple as that.

Sorry, made a mistake with the score, would have been 6-16, my bad...

Yeah, I don't see how anyone can say the decision to kick was the right one unless your kicker is Mark Mosely or Chip Lohmiller in 1991.
Converting the 4th and 1 could have been the spark we needed, but ... we'll never know that now.
bigSkinsfan61 10-09-2006, 04:56 PM i believe that if we had gone for it we wood have made it and the outcome wood have been different i love JG just a momentum thing it was swinging our was and that one dicision squelched it u know?
chris36 10-09-2006, 05:11 PM Thats exactly what I am saying!!!!! Be bold. Make a statement and try to win the game.
yoadrienne71 10-09-2006, 05:39 PM Lets be fair to Joe Gibbs, please. If nothing else, Joe brought Washington 3 trophies to Marty's nil. He deserves that much respect at the very least.
Without question, Joe Gibbs should be calling the plays for the Redskins offense. His play calling got the Redskins to the playoffs last year. For whatever reason, they're trying to fix what wasn't remotely broken. It worked, beat our division foes & defenses that were supposedly stronger than our offense.
The conservative nature of the play calling that has been somewhat of a staple this season is kind of alarming seeing's how the Skins have nothing but ugly opponents in the coming weeks. Al Saunders, while good for Kansas City, isn't showing me jack as far as the Skins are concerned. It's 700 pages of crap, honestly. Sure, last week's walk off touchdown to Santana was thrilling, but that is not Joe Gibbs football.
Joe Gibbs football is smashmouth, jam the ball down the lineman's throat football. At some point, we'll see Clinton leave cleat-marks on someone's back. Hope it's next week.
