what is up with our defense? for the past 2+ seasons, has been top 10 quality. the only 2 changes have been ryan clark and lavar. did someone underestimate how much they meant to this team?
Missing Springs is HUGE.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 09-12-2006, 10:29 AM The defense was the bigger disappointment. I expected the defense to be solid and I think we in D.C. have been a little spoiled by our D. They played okay, not spectacular, just okay. They were pretty good against the run (allowing C.T. to average less than 3 ypc), but they allowed far too many big plays on 3rd down or made dumb penalties. That said, they allowed about 300 yards and 19 points ... above average, but not Redskins D.
I didn't expect much out of the offense and I didn't see much out of them either. They moved the ball quite well, that is until they got into the red zone 4 times and went 1(TD)-3(FG). They've got far too much talent to score just 16 points at home, on Monday night, against the Vikings defense.
Overall, the offense played a worse game, but I expected the defense to be good and the offense to be just average. So, I'm more disappointed in the defense.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 09-12-2006, 10:33 AM I put that loss on the defense. The offense made it into the red zone 4 times and within scoring range another. You can't let a team off of their own goal line (bad penalty notwithstanding) ever. You can't let a team convert 53% on 3rd down. You can't let Brad Johnson, Troy Williamson, Chester Taylor and Travis Taylor make big plays on you, ever. Especially at home. I'd hate to be in practice Wednesday if I was on Williams D but he needs to do 40 up-downs himself for that vanilla defense he called..
Wait, I don't understand how you put the loss on the defense and proceed to point out how the offense scored just 1 touchdown in 4 trips to the red zone. The defense definately needs improvement, but I would think you'd expect more than 16 points out of a Saunders, Portis, Moss, ARE, Cooley, Lloyd offense playing at home.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 09-12-2006, 10:36 AM The bottom line is neither unit made plays when they needed to. The defense needed to make plays on 3rd downs and they didn't. The offense needed to actually score touchdowns and, save 1, they didn't.
I watched the game like all the Redskin faithful. I anticipated and planned for the game for weeks. I was disappointed. I have read all the why's and how's detailing what injury, penalty, limp ass kicker are the cause for the loss. Although it was a close game by the scoreboard, I am just ...........................Damn disapponted. It was not that close. I will survive............but, I personally do not remember a game when we could NOT step up, anywhere. The Vikes did what they had to do when they had to do it. That is the mark of championship team. We did not. I firmly believe we have a more talented team, staff, etc. We did not play like it, and if one player injured, or a couple of penalties gone the wrong way=loss........................be a long season. As somebody stated earlier, we got dominated. Our killer O-line, D-line, etc got bitched.........regularly. To many people say, we are just trying to buy a SB with overpriced free agents. last night, we proved them right. I Felt like I was watching Houston. maybe it will light a fire in their bellies for the Cowboys. If not..........I don't want to think about it-Damn disappointing
EXoffender 09-12-2006, 12:32 PM To many new guys on both sides of the ball. Players have to get aquainted with each other before anyone will start making make plays. That's why Ryan Clark was (and Demetric Evans is) so valuable to us. In the long term, Archuleta may have better stats than Clark but, how many games do we have to lose before everyone is on the same page? It could be too late.

We can lose a conference game at home. Once Gibbs get it goin'...ain't no stopping us.
DaveyFoSho 09-12-2006, 12:39 PM Why couldnt we get a call when our guy got drillllllled from behind after a ball sailed way over his head.....Taylor got that flag when he hit a receiver still trying to make a play on the ball!!! and that was not helmet first he deffinately hit him with his shoulder!! Im not making any excuses but those two plays, the one call and the one blown call, screwed us!
onlydarksets 09-12-2006, 12:40 PM I don't think anyone would say the offense looked like the Chiefs of the past few years, but they did put up some points. I thought the defense was going to be able to keep the Vikes from moving the ball, but, obviously, that wasn't the case. I wonder if the D was a little shell-shocked on that opening drive?

I honestly think that Springs' absence meant the difference in the game. I think Springs is one of the most important players to the defense, second only to Griffin.
