I say pass on Gildon as well, unless he signs for the minimum with incentives, which I doubt he will do.
The reason is.... hasn't Jason Gildon (while he has not missed many games) had knee problems the last few years? I don't want another Dave Fiore, a former great player in his 30's that is entering his injury filled years.
I agree with PSUskinsfan11, Sam Adams would be a better pick up. The DE's we have along with LB's Arrington and Washington as our nicel and dime DE's will be great. I see Dt as more of a priority for upgrade.

yes a DT would be ideal, but the DT crop isnt very deep, so picking up Gildon may be a decent option for a few years...but the only way i think hed be a good pickup is if wed switch to a 3-4 and plug him in as the 2nd middle linebacker, with mitchell to backup the 2

Most talent guys think Gildon has some steam left in the tank apparently. I'd bet he'll end up with a three year type deal where the first two years are low cap numbers. I'd guess probably a 2.5 million signing bonus and maybe 3 million in base salary giving him something like 1.3, 1.8, 2.3 type caps numbers. I don't think we'll be the ones to givce him the money since we just dug ourselves out from under a bad LB contract with Trotter.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking, too. At the very least, he'd be a great insurance policy should (God forbid!) Arrington or Washington go down.

If we were to change to a 3-4 and sign Gildon, do you think Griffen would be able to produce at all? he isnt a nose tackle, 6-3 300, so the transition may be tough...if we were to change he may need to move to end and we plug jermaine haley in there or something

He'll get a team to give up a big contract. Hes getting old but hes still got a few years of top level play in him. The Steelers will always be able to groom new linebackers, they drafted Alonzo Jackson last year and Steelers fans like his progression so far. Every few years the Steelers dump a top linebacker into free agency so they can groom anothre to become a star. Gildon will do well somewhere and he will get the money to do it. I dont really see a need fo rhim in Washington though, we dont need a starter for depth, he would cost way to much money to just be a third down linebacker so lavar can play end.
