Saturday's game against the Pats wasn't pretty. No way to sugarcoat that. And being the third preseason game it's the most important one. Which I guess is like saying Ashlee is the smart Simpsons sister. And, like someone keenly observed in another thread, you can't really compare this team entirely to 1991 because the core of that group had been around for a few years.

However, a few things to note. Raise your left hand if you recall at the end of 2004 and a 6-10 record when a whole bunch of people here were screaming "Gibbs has lost it, the game's passed him by." Now raise your right if you recall people panicking when Coles said he wanted out, and then we lost Pierce and Smoot on top of that. Now stand on your right foot if you recall the mass hysteria when Gibbs insisted that we hadn't seen the last of Brunell. Now hop on your foot if you remember the sheer devastation that engulfed much of this board when we lost three in a row last year including a pathetic loss to the Raiders that left us at 5-6. All hope was lost then remember?

By now most of you should be jumping up and down with your hands high in the air. But what ended up happening last year? 10-6 with a playoff win. Point is, actually I don't know what the point is, just that it seems there are way too many sky is falling attitudes.

What I've always felts separates Gibbs from other coaches is his ability to finish strong. There are few, if any, coaches in the history of the NFL that have his December record. What that tells me is that so long as the Redskins stay in contention through the first 8 or 10 games, they're in good position to separate themselves from the rest of the pack down the stretch.

So no, I'm not worried.

I know, I know...I'm late on this poll but here goes. The Redskins really have me scratching my head after Saturday. The one consistent thing that I've seen in all three games is that the team is flat. They're flat during the game and they are flat during the interviews to be honest. And if I hear one more time that we are only using 2 percent of Al Saunders' vaunted playbook, I'm going to puke. What is that suppose mean? Do you really think the Bengals, Jets, and the Pats were going all out? The Pats were basically sending Ben Watson, no guys in motion, straight down the middle to shred our defense.

The two bright spots, the only two bright spots, during the game were both Sean Taylor and LeMar Marshall. Both were in or around nearly every play. I thought ST was playing middle linebacker for a while there. Seemed like he snuffed out the run plays quite often. Marshall was effective on both the run and defending the pass. It appears to me that these guys, along with M.Washington, really bring it every game.

I think our dilima could be somewhat of a carry over from last year. I'm reaching on this one but I think it's possible this team only responds well to adversity. I hope I'm wrong but we'll see in three weeks.

what me worry nope not me cause it,s preseason.
i,m thinking of hitting the easy button cause i,m realizing the skins are running a vanilla offense and defense to begin with.

one of coach gibbs greatest attributes is the ability to make game time adjustments. this is something that just doesnt happen during preseason

Great Post. I agree with you and I'm not worried yet. I've bought into watching the preseason this year because I was so excited about all of our new talent and our new coach. The couple of things I have learned this preseason are this, Al Saunders is not going to give me a hint of what we will run on 9-11 and our new offensive talents aren't going to shine until 9-11.

There is no need to be completely worried. I keep hearing about "vanilla" and "2%" but we got whooped saturday in one on one situations. I know they were trying to look at the offensive line as individuals and see what the could do in space and well they failed miserably everyone of them. Randy Thomas, Casey Rabach, and Dockery could not stop the middle blitzers for nothing. Now the good news is this will be fixed in 2 ways, one Bugel will not put up with that type of play and secondly they will be able to work together and pick those blitzers up. They were trying to see what they could do on an island all alone that is very hard to do as a offensive lineman. The tackles were horrible as well and Jansen got plum run over, this area should be a little more of a concern cause the tackles are alot of times left alone on an island, but you never saw a Tight End or Running back assist with the tackles which they normally do even if it is a shiver push. The tackles had to do it all on there own again a daunting task that will not happen during the regular season. Brunell did not throw to well but that was hard from the bottom of the pile he was consistantly under but he did look to have still some life in those feet of his which is good because that is how he makes plays.

The Defense well they worried me alot more again I know it was One on One type of stuff but our secondary looked very pedistrian. Kenny Wright could cover a bed if he was a blanket, we need to find someone else to back up springs ( I think Rumph should eventually take over that spot he looked okay from what little I saw of him) if not we are in trouble. I was so amped about the signing of Archealeta, i thought him and Taylor back there, here comes the pain but dang he is slow and could not keep up with there tight ends, and in this division he is going against tight ends like Shockey, Smith, and Witten he and our linebackers better figure a way to stick those tight ends. As great as Sean Taylor is he needs to stop looking into the backfield and watch the ball he got caught a few times peaking into the backfield and got burnt that is a rookie type of mistake not something he should be doing. I know he wants to stuff the run but dang gotta stop looking in the backfield and start following the ball, Archuelata does this also and I think that is why he was getting burnt by the tight ends. Still a scarey tandum but I guarantee Coughlin, Parcells, and Reid saw that and will test them with play action and use of there tight ends.

You can say this is preaseason or vanilla offense and defense but a good bit of these mistakes are things you teach kids in high school not to do and need to be fixed. There is no reason to panic just yet but Someobody needs to step up and lead this team and hold individuals accountable. There are still to many mental errors. But I truley beleive they will fix this there are to many great athletes on this team, and to much pride to let this go on. I know we wont see much of the startes Thursday but I do beleive what you do see will be a lot different and lot more crisp.

We were 1-3 last year and were outscored 88-64...and were a few points from playing in the championship game. :)

The hammer is in my hand ready to break the glass. We looked horrible last night. Offense didn't do shit, defense didn't do shit, backup defense didn't do shit, nobody did shit. It's one thing to say it was just one game, but this has been happening the whole preseason. Our starting offense hasn't even scored a touchdown yet. We've looked bad across the board. I still have a little hope that things are gonna change one the regular season starts. It's just that this team hasn't shown me anything to believe that might happen.

Nuff said! At least last year we did have 64 points. I trust Gibbs will right the ship but even He seems a little concerned. Thank god we have a pretty easy start to the season.

I'm not even really going to worry if our offense struggles the first few games of pre-season... it's a new system and we are basically going to be leaning on the D for a while until everyone is comfortable with the scheme. In addition to primarily evaluating fringe players, I have an inkling our veteran coaching staff wants to make sure our players don't start believing the hype before the season starts... These past few games (while meaning absolutely nothing in the standings) should keep their heads level.

The glass has been broken, the key is in the ignition, just waiting for the word to hit it -- Our first string offense has not scored a point in preseason. I understand that we do not want to unveil the offense but you have got to have some success to build on. That's not my biggest worry. The first string defense has been toasted with play action fakes, end reverses and flea flickers. Adam Archuleta could not cover my grandmother. He is a defensive liability. There were a lot of posts of people being excited Arch was picked up by the Redskins. I was saying -- NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!! I live in St. Louis and by default have to see too many Rams games and I can tell you, Arch can't cover. His only ability is to blitz, thats why the Rams let him go. Now the Skins are stuck with him because they overpaid the bum. Should have paid that money to Ryan Clark. Big mistake. Brady showed how to expose Arch's weakness. We will see it again.
