Now that they won't be able to trade him for anything, we should keep an eye on Lee Suggs. He's worth a 6th rnd. pick, or maybe we could nab him as soon as he hits the waiver wire.
He's got durability issues & doesn't have great balance, but he has blazing speed & can hit the hole as quick as anybody.

Doubt it. Didn't pass the physical, we're already having issues here and there and I can't see us bringing in a guy like this. Besides, I think the focus, besides Portis, is to get Ladell up and running and signed for a few more years.

I wonder if he can play center for them?

WHY?!??!?!?!?!?
We have Portis and even if Portis would be lost for the year, which is unlikely, Betts will step right in and keep up our 100-yard+ rushing games. Cartwright is a GREAT backup (3rd-stringer) and that rookie Lumsden is a quality 4th- stringer/emergency back.
Even with Kerry Carter, we have an incredibly deep RB situation. Not just deep, QUALITY depth.
Suggs would be a wasted roster spot. It's bad enough Todd Collins will be on the roster. We could use another CB or LB. Those positions can NEVER have enough backups.

you're probably right, I wonder why he failed his physical & how long he'll be out. If he can get healthy early in the year though, he'd be a great 3rd string back to have, or 2nd if CP is still out.
Kerry Carter blew his knee out and has been cut.

Behind Betts, we don't have a single back capable of carrying the full load while giving us the rush yards we need to be successful. That said, no need to take on another injured RB.

Suggs is not a good idea. If he can't even pass a physical to play for the Jets, what makes you think he'd be good here? You know the Jets are desperate for a RB, they probably told the doctors "look if he can walk, pass him on the physical."

I believe Cartwright could be good, but you do have a point at this time.
However, how many teams other than Denver and MAYBE Chicago have 3 RBs capable of being starters without losing anything from their #1 RB?
Suggs wouldn't give us a third quality RB even if we WERE shopping.
freddyg12 08-16-2006, 02:21 PM I just read that he has osteoarthritis & that's why he failed the physical. He's not injured at the moment, in fact he's played in every practice & in their preseason game. The condition he has is also called degenerative joint disease & over time he'll lose cartilage in his knee.
Maybe when the Jets saw that they didn't feel it was worth it to give up their CB Strait for him.
I'm certainly not saying he's worth any substantial $, cause long-term that condition is troubling. But for vet min. $ as a reserve, he's a lot better than cartwright & has led his team in rushing before.
As for our "shopping", well we did just sign an undrafted rookie named Harris so the coaches are concerned about RB depth. Carter is cut & both Lumsden & Betts didn't play in the preseason game. Not to mention, Ladell has played in 48 of 64 games in his career, so he's shown a propensity to get hurt too.
Sugss is very injury prone but when healthy he's a proven nfl rb, which we don't have beyond Portis, Betts & Cartright. And let's face it, Rock will always be a tough 2nd or 3rd string guy who has to make the team playing special teams.
