What do you guys make of this? I say there's no way we trade him unless the Jets come with an outstanding offer.

New York Daily News (scroll down): "With Curtis Martin's career in jeopardy, the Jets are eager to see if Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston can do the job. If not, they almost certainly will trade for a veteran. The Redskins' Ladell Betts has emerged as a possibility."

There is no way Gibbs would ever ever ever ever ever ever ever trade Ladell Betts. Unless it was for two first rounders.

These rumors are stemming from either the Jets' front office who may simply be brainstorming, trying to think of teams with great RB depth; or from the Jets' fans/media who remember the recent trades and deals between the 'Skins and Jets, and think they might partner up for a deal once again.

As soon as this issue is presented to Gibbs, I can 100% guarantee you his answer will be something to the effect of "Ladell Betts is not available."

End of story.

Why so confident that Gibbs won't trade him? He's a free agent after this season & maybe they done the #s & realize they won't be able to offer him much. He'll want to go somewhere he can start too, & that will only be by injury here.
If we do trade him, we better get something big in return, we've been hookin the Jets up w/sweet deals for far too long, even our draft day trade to get Rocky was way too one-sided. Who do they have that we need?

1) Player for player trades in the NFL are extremely rare. If we traded Betts, it would be for picks. But we won't trade him because...

2) You do realize Joe Gibbs is the coach of the 'Skins right? He values depth soooo much. Rock Cartwright is alright at times, and Lumsden is looking good in camp, but in the end do you see Gibbs trusting the backup job to either of those guys? No way in hell.

3) Saunders LOVES Ladell Betts. He has said that Betts is capable of big things in this league, and compared his skill set to that of Priest Holmes (not a quality comparison, just a style comparison). Saunders has said that Ladell is a complete back, capable of running hard, catching passes reliably, and picking up blitzes consistently. He has also said that Betts and Portis have unique skill sets, and in certain situations, he'll put them both in the same backfield to create matchup problems with the defense.

Just pay attention to the coaching staff. There's no way they're trading this guy.

Betts is too important to our RB depth to trade him.

Think about it, if Portis went down would you want Cartwright becoming the featured guy?? Please.

Once again, Betts is too important to trade. I agree with Schneed 110%. There's no way we deal him.

We're gunning for a Super Bowl run, what good is a draft pick going to do us right now? Nothing. Besides, this front office really doesn't place much emphasis on building via the draft. I really can't think of one realistic reason why we would deal him.

I've got to go with Scheed and Matty on this.

Betts is too important to the team's depth to let him go right now. I understand that we could lose him to free agency at the end of the season but at least that would give the front office time to look for a replacement. There's almost no time before the season starts to get a back-up that the team would feel comfortable with, IMO, especially since the coaching staff seems to like Betts so much.

I know one thing, if Portis went down, I definitely wouldn't want Rock Cartwright or Jesse Lumsden in there as the last line of defense for picking up blitzing linebackers. While I'm eager to see what Jason Campbell can do, in no way do I want to see Brunell get hurt. We tend to think about the running production from a RB more than anything, and the tendency is to forget about the pass protection. But an RBs role as a pass blocker is just as important as anything. We've all read it and said it over and over, Brunell's health is key to the 'Skins success in 2006. So let's keep him healthy and pretty please make sure we are two-deep with solid pass blocking RBs.

I agree with schneed as i think betts means more to us than he would mean to the jets or anyother team. We value him more than anyone else would. Our coaches are in love with him and feel he is as valuable as an extremely high pick but the jets probably don't think so. We wouldn't be able to reach an agreement.

Betts to me is very important to this team. He and clinton should be splitting the carries. It will be very important for him to do well and stay on this team.

THe only thing that i think that might make this happen is our depth. Everyone loves rock and jessie is playing well. Jesse and nemo are bigger backs than betts so i think they could make up for his loss on the goalline. I really hope jesse makes this team. He really makes me excited.
