Jets interested in Betts?illdefined 08-16-2006, 02:16 AM he any good? how old? what string? anything less than no.2 and i'd ask the Jets for a backup lineman too Luxorreb 08-16-2006, 07:56 AM Betts ain't going anywhere right now! freddyg12 08-16-2006, 08:59 AM Betts ain't going anywhere right now! today's wash. post reported that talks have begun about an extension: washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/15/AR2006081501289.html) Extension for Betts? Veteran running back Ladell Betts, who returned to practice from a hamstring injury yesterday, confirmed that preliminary discussions with the Redskins about a contract extension are under way. Betts, the primary backup for injured franchise running back Clinton Portis, is eligible for free agency in the offseason, and, despite believing he has the skills to be a starter in the NFL, is happy in Washington. "I'm definitely open to staying here," said Betts, a second-round pick in 2002. "The Redskins were the first team to give me an opportunity to play NFL football, so I'm definitely willing to listen." Betts recently switched agents, signing with Tony Agnone, and Coach Joe Gibbs said there has been some contact between Agnone and director of football administration Eric Schaffer. "We like Ladell," Gibbs said. "We always want to sign all of our good football players." 12thMan 08-16-2006, 09:10 AM Wouldn't suprise me if they something done before the season starts MTK 08-16-2006, 09:39 AM It would be great to lock up Betts for a few more years. BrudLee 08-16-2006, 09:47 AM if portis nees a reliable backup that is a powerhouse, why not sign stephen davis for this year?he has proven he can get the tough yards, and his worst problem has been his fumblitis the last few years in carolina.saunders had two great rbs in kc in johnson/holmes,and betts is good he is nowhere near the same level as a back as SD is! I think Betts is a much better option than Davis is now. While a healthy Stephen Davis is a stellar RB, he hasn't been healthy in years, and there's no reason to think he;s found the fountain of youth. And the fact that he was less than kind to the team after his departure, and I'll pass on a minimum salary deal. MTK 08-16-2006, 09:52 AM Davis is way past being done. Southpaw 08-16-2006, 10:44 AM Wouldn't suprise me if they something done before the season starts I'd be willing to bet that he'll be gone after this season, unless Washington offers him the farm. When a player makes a comment like, "I think I could start in the league, but I'll consider their offer" it's usually the kiss of death. And firing an agent isn't really a sign of "I'm happy where I'm at". If another team offer's him a starting job, he's a goner unless Washington gives him a boat load of cash. 12thMan 08-16-2006, 11:19 AM I'd be willing to bet that he'll be gone after this season, unless Washington offers him the farm. Not sure Ladell has had the type of career that warrants a boat load of cash. If we're talking TJ Duckett (ATL), maybe. I've said it before, it's just my opinion, Ladell could start in this league but I think he's more of 1,000 to 1100 yd type of back. He won't fetch Clinton Portis type money in any event. If I were the Skins I'd try to treat Betts like we did Lemar Marshall. Marshall got 3 years, $2.2 million from us. That deal was struck a few years ago, and the cap has gone up since then, so I'd figure an offer of $3 million for 3 years would make a lot of sense to start discussions. I don't think there's any way Betts would take that, because I think other teams are a lot more aware of his skills than they were of Lemar Marshall. In the end if I were the Skins, I'd agree to give Betts $9 million over 4 years, and that would probably be fair value. If he's asking for $5 million per season or something, then let him go. RBs can be replaced. |
