Closing in on DiMaggio....Dom DiMaggio

I thought Luis Castillo had a good shot when he was on his hit streak a few years ago simply for the fact that if he just beat 4 balls into the dirt he was probably going to beat one out.

Chase Utley, on the other hand, I don't know. Joey D threw up 56 straight. I'm not trying to take away from his hit streak. 33 games is certainly impressive. But think about it. He's gotta go for 23 more to tie. 23 games is a very nice hit streak on its own. I just can't see it happening. I do hope he gets close, but I just can't see him catching or passing Joe D.

Eleven games gets him the NL record. I love his attitude during the whole thing. He'll talk about the game to reporters, but completely ignores "streak" questions.

NL Record would be really impressive and then I would consider him a legit threat to 56. That would be cool to see. I'm pulling for him. If he's thinking about it he should think 11 and then 12 more. If he gets it done, that'll be something to see.

it's always fun to see someone try to reach Joey D's streak...i just hate the hype around it. it should be treated like a no hitter...no one talks about it, but everyone knows about it.

I agree. I also like how it is a player who isn't a "big star". He's just a good all-around player who's not in the news much. Maybe that's because he's on the Phillies. I'd rather see Utley break the record than Ichiro or some steriod junkie.

I disagree. The hitting streak is one of the most coveted achievements in baseball as well as sports in general. To have just a good all-around player break it only diminishes the perception of the achievement. The streak helps show just how great a hitter Joe D was. If Utley breaks it but winds up with a career .263 BA then what does that record reflect. If Utley breaks the record then I'll think that's cool, but that achievment will do more by bringing down the significance of the record than it will raising his hitting legacy.

Sorry if I jinx him...but he won't do it.

This is going to continue to be a record that looks attainable but will end up standing for a long time.

33 is very impressive though.

Remember, Joe DiMaggio broke a hitting streak record of 52 games that had been held since 1887!!!! It's just not easy to do.

This is the record I've been keeping an eye on. :)

I know a guy who saw DiMaggio sitting at the counter of Dinkie's Doughnuts, and he was dunking!
