I disagree. The hitting streak is one of the most coveted achievements in baseball as well as sports in general. To have just a good all-around player break it only diminishes the perception of the achievement. The streak helps show just how great a hitter Joe D was. If Utley breaks it but winds up with a career .263 BA then what does that record reflect. If Utley breaks the record then I'll think that's cool, but that achievment will do more by bringing down the significance of the record than it will raising his hitting legacy.

Utley has progressively gotten better each year he's been in the majors. It looks like he's going to be a good, if not great, player for a long time.

I know a guy who saw DiMaggio sitting at the counter of Dinkie's Doughnuts, and he was dunking!joe dimagio could not be a dunker.

Somebody, sometime will break 56. Probably pretty soon.

Utley has a long, long way to go. I doubt he does it here. But I don't see this streak ending in the next few days, so let see where he goes with it.

Phillies will trade him away ala Ryne Sandburg.

Don't get me wrong about my perception of Utley, I think he is playing very well so far in his career. I hope he continues to improve but right now he is still a "who? oh yeah, he's pretty good" to a lot of people. I was trying to say in more words than necessary that I would rather a "career hitter" (Larry Walker, Paul Molitor type) break the record than some guy with three years experience who is starting to become good.

On another note, it may not be the same sort of streak but how about David Ortiz?

In his last 13 potential game-winning at bats he's delivered 12 times. The one time he didn't he ended up coming through in the 12th inning. I don't care for the Red Sox and I know that he definitely benefits from playing with Manny but still that's pretty damn clutch.

Looks like the streak is over. But hey, what a great streak it was while it lasted.

the safe money is always on betting against record-breaking. it was a good run though.

I think he had something like 22 multihit games during that streak, that equals how many DiMaggio had in his entire streak. The stat is something like that.

Plus I think more people have pitched perfect games than have had longer hitting streaks than he did. So nothing to be ashamed of.
