scowan 08-03-2006, 02:26 PM I think we can all agree: the Lombardi trophy should be renamed to the Gibbs trophy. ;)
You can re-name it the Gibbs trophy, if he wins another Superbowl and then leaves the game. And then probably in another 10-15 years.
Just think if the Skins were to win the division this year with a 11-5 record or something like that and then win the Superbowl from the Divisonal round. Gibbs record would go to 155-81 or 0.657 and his playoff record would go to 20-6 a whopping 0.769. Wow! We can only hope, but it is not a streach really. Not to mentioned the fact that he would have won 4 Superbowls with 4 different QBs. Guys like Chuck Noel and Bill Walsh, may have won the same number, but with the same QBs
Beemnseven 08-03-2006, 06:46 PM Of the coaches coaching today, you have to say that other than Gibbs, Belichick is the real deal. Bilick on the other hand had one good Superbowl run in 2000 with the Ravens that "boosts" his playoff record. He won 4 playoff games that year from the Wildcard position to make his playoff record 5-2, otherwise he would be 1-2. John Fox has had a couple of good runs with the Panthers in 2003 from the Wildcard position and last year, but he has yet to win the BIG one. This year could be his year however.
I would take Gibbs and his planning and preperation over all of the guys when it matters, or Bilichick in the playoffs ONLY. Nobody has done it better in the Regular season AND the Playoffs like Gibbs however.
It gets said over and over, to the point that people probably stop thinking about it, but Gibbs not only did it with three different quarterbacks, he did it with two of them being named Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. Not to take anything away from them, but Williams and Rypien seem pretty much out of contention for the Hall of Fame. Unlike Tom Brady. While Ryp and Doug will have their names in the history books as Super Bowl MVPs, they are not generally regarded as "GREAT" or "LEGENDS" of the game. Again, unlike Tom Brady is likely to be perceived. Gibbs also did it during strike years -- and in '87, one of his replacement teams went against a veteran, NFL pro team that had already returned and still beat them.
Just think, if only they had been up to the task against the Raiders in '83. It's the only real blemish in Gibbs' armor. Had it not been for that game, it would have been Gibbs, not Bill Walsh and the Niners, who most would think of first as the coach and the team of the 80's.
TrustinGibbs 08-03-2006, 07:18 PM WHEN (not IF)Gibbs wins another Super Bowl he's got to jump to number one on the All-Time list of Head Coaches. Others guys won 4 but none will have won the last one 20+ years after his first one with 4 different QB's, AFTER being elected to the HOF in a completely different era...When he wins the next one he goes from one of the all time greats to the top of the heap IMO.
Course I'm biased.
That Guy 08-03-2006, 07:35 PM HCFF has some logic errors in some of their stat munching... like the fact that their draft "fillability" thing totally disregards free agent signings. the skins get a D becuase they didn't draft a WR, even though we signed 2 that are just as good as those that went in the 1st and 2nd rounds. The cards got a D for drafting a QB cause they already have a 36year old, injury prone guy that hasn't finished a full season sitting behind one of the worst O lines in football. I mean, wtf?

Not just three different QBs but three different RBs as well and only Riggo is a Hall of Famer.

Not even Lombardi could go to another team and win again. Coach Gibbs returned after 12 years off and he is kicking ass. If he wins he should truly be considered one of, if not the greatest.
Of course i am biased too, but that is OK!

lombardi did wonders for the skins in his short time here. if he had a couple more years, i think he could have pulled it off :/
we've have more than our fair share of good coaching, going all the way back to the 30s.
TrustinGibbs 08-04-2006, 01:02 PM Joe Gibbs the Football Coach in only topped by Joe Gibbs the MAN.
Over the past 25 years Gibbs has been the main man of a sports franchise that had a legitimate shot at winning a championchip. Only a couple of times in his NFL Headcoaching career has his team been concidered an also ran, his 1st and last season the first time around and his first season of his return.
In his 12 year hiatus from the NFL he ONLY built a Nascar team that is a title contender on a yearly basis. Joe Gibb's picture belongs next to the word WIN or WINNER in the Dictionary. In two seperate Sports Joe Gibbs found a way to win with ever changing parts and contended for a title almost every single year over a 25 year period of time. Mind Boggling IMO.
Inspite of an almost unparalleled run of success in Sports Joe Gibbs has remained humble, always putting his team ahead of himself and has always remained true to himself, his team, his faith and his family. This is a truely AMAZING man and we as Skin's fan's should thank the Sports God's that we were chosen to be along for the ride.
