Has such a storied franchise ever had a fall from grace this quickly, and badly? First Alex Smith and now overpaying an unproven rookie TIGHT END, and who is the coach that is going to bring them back to glory......the great Mike "bend don't break" Nolan.

I love the fact that Dallas signed Witten before this deal came out!! Gates is going to ask for more money, so will crumpler, and so will Cooley.
This deal is nuts.
I will go on record as saying that this 4.3 speed doesn't last for more than one and a half seasons....
big fast guys in the NFL always seem to get hit flush and get worn down quickly, or get injured ala Bo Jackson, and to a lesser degree Terrell Davis.
I just think that there is just too must body to hit...

Kellen winslows??? he is in the same boat as vernon davis.
I agree it seems kind of screwey, but we have to remember that the salary cap limit jumped by nearly 20% this year from last year. Consequently the relative value of all contracts should have jumped the same amount.
Just about every contract we see signed by these guys will probably feel like "holy crap, how much is he getting???" It's just a product of the cap going up.
Besides, we all know that rookie salaries are dictated by what the picks in front and behind those players are getting. There's a bit of a rookie scale.
Does Vernon Davis deserve to be the highest paid TE? Hell no, which is exactly why guys like Gates, Gonzalez, Heath Miller, and Kellen Winslow will all get huge ass paydays when their contract comes due. All this does is raise the market value of a TE up from where it was last year, which makes sense since the cap went up.

He reminds me more of big John Mackey with more speed, and will probably become more of a power TE end as his career progresses.

i love how he plays and everything but he is not proven as an nfl player and therefore shouldn't be the highest paid in the league. after this year or next year i believe he will be the best in the nfl and should be the highest paid

Who the TE is wasn't my point. The point was rising tides raises all boats. This Vernon Davis deal simply reflects the increase in the salary cap. All TEs will see a good boost, and some TEs will soon blow this Vernon Davis contract right out of the water. Who that TE is, you can split hairs about that all you want. All I'm saying is that this deal seems crazy now, but when you consider the salary cap increases, it's not that out of whack.

But if you want to argue Winslow vs Davis, what's the difference? They've both done exactly jack squat in the NFL. They were both selected with the 6th pick in the draft. At the time they were drafted, they were both anointed the second coming at TE. The only difference is that Winslow hurt himself by being a moron. But as for performance on the field, neither have done anything whatsoever to distinguish one from another.
Any statement suggesting one will be better than the other when all is said and done is nothing but pure speculation.

I love the fact that Dallas signed Witten before this deal came out!! Gates is going to ask for more money, so will crumpler, and so will Cooley.Cooley's rookie deal was for four years and he will get a big payday very soon. Because hes not going to be eligible for RFA, expect the redskins to give him a big money deal (barring a significant production dropoff) either later this year or next offseason.
He's been a good soldier despite outplaying his contract, and the front office will reward him accordingly. Probably won't sniff Davis money though.
