As a student at UMD college park...i see nothing wrong with this...he was pretty much the whole reason why we did anything on offense...he will haev a great carreer and may be destined for the HOF...he is massive and can run quicker than most premier receivers.....i love me some VD!!! (the guy not the diseases)

Hold up just a second... Hall of Fame bound? It's a tad early to be throwing out predictions like that don't you think? Let's see the guy play first.

The NFL has had plenty of busts who were physical freaks.

ESPN.com - NFL - Niners make No. 6 pick Davis highest-paid tight end (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2532619)

Wow, highest paid TE in the league before ever taking a snap. Anything wrong with this picture?

I agree it seems kind of screwey, but we have to remember that the salary cap limit jumped by nearly 20% this year from last year. Consequently the relative value of all contracts should have jumped the same amount.

Just about every contract we see signed by these guys will probably feel like "holy crap, how much is he getting???" It's just a product of the cap going up.

Besides, we all know that rookie salaries are dictated by what the picks in front and behind those players are getting. There's a bit of a rookie scale.

Does Vernon Davis deserve to be the highest paid TE? Hell no, which is exactly why guys like Gates, Gonzalez, Heath Miller, and Kellen Winslow will all get huge ass paydays when their contract comes due. All this does is raise the market value of a TE up from where it was last year, which makes sense since the cap went up.

with 2 career catches, and losing 60 lbs in the offseason, i doubt kellen is getting a huge payday any time soon ;)

Who else do the 49er's have on their team that they need to spend any decent amount of money on?

He is the most sure bet in the draft...I suppose the deal is fair for the current market for top draft picks.

im not sure it matters how good he is as long as alex smith is the quarterback

i'm not sure i agree with that. he had good numbers, but his college production didn't match those numbers and he wasn't stellar on deep balls.

I don't think he'll be a bust or anything, but i think a guy like D'brick is an even safer bet.

Now, i don't ever think a player coming into the league deserves that kind of respect. I was just joking around because he is a terp. He is going to be fantastic in my opinion and will compete for rookie of the year with God himself, bush. I just don't understand how he can get paid more than players like gates, shockey, witten, lj, and others. He is unproven and if he turns out to be nearly as good as gates then that would be amazing so getting paid more than top TEs doesn't make sense. The 9ers don't have many good players so i guess they want their best player happy.

A couple of my friends got to be on the field during a game last year and they said vernon is amazingly big. BEAST.
