Carey is good. He should have ejected ST as he did but he should have also ejected Pittman. The are rules for a reason and breaking one in front of the ref for any reason should result in the normal punishment. The rule doesn't say "Upon throwing a punch a player shall be ejected except if done in response to something really really bad." It says you get ejected. If there were caveats to rules to allow for emotional responses then why the hell are there rules at all? I think he did a very good job and was right with ejecting ST but he blatantly disregarded the rules by not ejecting Pittman. He doesn't get to decide whether punching someone is ejectable or not and in which situations it is. Maybe someday he will get that power but he doesn't have it now.

That game was a train wreck to watch. I remember feeling sorry for the Ravens at first, because it seemed like the officiating crew was daring them to even breathe hard. Then they show dumbass Brian Billick perpetuating the same sloppy, disrespectful behavior that his team was displaying, and I was like "Screw it, toss the whole team".

I'm still shocked that an NFL franchise acted the way the Ravens did that day.

I swear to God I had nightmares about Suggs after he got ejected. He looked like he was going to eat someone's head.

I'll agree with you about that ref. I was ready to shout a bit because I thought of Mike Alstott's extra-long but invisible elbow when I saw the thread title.

Before the spitting, it was just some normal, playoff juiced bumping and shoving. ST took it to a whole nother level and Carey did the right thing in throwing him out.
I can remember when that happened and I was rather new to the Warpath board and there were too many sticking up for Sean and saying spitting was just part of the game. Maybe in the pile ups and away from an officals eye, but that does not make it ok and certainly you don't do it with a ref a foot from your face. Classless then, classless now.
Good call and Carey is a great ref in a league that does not have many.

i love taylor but in a playoff game why would he even think about spitting on someone? in my old neighborhood there is nothing you can do to someone that is lower, shows a total lack of respect for someone, then spitting on someone. you might as well be saying, come on lets fight. mike carey called a brilliant game by letting the players dictate to him what calls will be made.

pittman took action back and the rules say he is to be penalized. I don't think a little push is enough to kick someone out of a game but 15 yards should have been added. I don't agree with it but it is not the ref's decision to make as much as it is his decision to throw taylor out. Taylor spits that means he is out, pittman reacts and he gets a personal foul. BOth penalties should have cancelled and taylor should have been ejected.
