Has any of the top 10 drafted been signed yet? Whats the usual time frame for that? Any thoughts on who do you think will sign first out of the top 10 or who will be the longest holdout?

Drift Reality 05-17-2004, 05:31 PM Timeframe is very arbitrary. The first pick is sometimes signed first due to the fact that the franchise that selected him has a longer timeframe to negotiate and to make sure that they can work with his agent, before they actually draft him. I don't think it's really that complicated though, there are some very standard procedures that examine the player's actual position, their position in the draft, past draft salaries, current player salaries, etc. Then you have people like the Postons, who make ridiculous claims about how their client should get #1 pick money because some teams had him listed as a #1 talent. That is the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard. That's worse than when Sean Gilbert (I think) said that he was asking for more money because God told him to. The first pick is sometimes signed first due to the fact that the franchise that selected him has a longer timeframe to negotiate and to make sure that they can work with his agent, before they actually draft him. Usually, that's true. However, with the trade after the pick, it's difficult to believe there's an advantage for either team. I understand the Raiders and Gallery are anxious to sign. Gallery wants to start from week 1, and he knows the value of camp. hi-jinx 05-17-2004, 06:23 PM I think certein positions training camp means even more. On the O-line its a lot about teamwork, any QB who holds out really starts deep in the hole. However a CB or even RB might not be hurt as much by missing some training camp. The reason I threw this out there was because I think we have the only top 10 pplayer without an agent. So to me that means that contract talks haven't even started yet. While I know it still early and I am sure S.T. wants to play, I am a bit worried. Ghost 05-18-2004, 02:58 AM I heard that Sean Taylor isn't really considering signing with the Postons ... Eugene Parker is the front-runner, I think, and supposedly the Skins like working with him. I don't remember the source ... it was at least a week ago, maybe two. As long as Sean is there for the start of training camp, I don't care when he gets signed ... they have a couple months to make the deal. I bet Taylor has a new agent within the next few days. Dave Butz Baby! 05-18-2004, 09:14 PM Just a quick update! The first draftee's contracts were signed just today. The Steelers signed two picks... both sixth rounders. I would guess we should expect to wait until the week before training camp before the top ten suddenly all fall in line and sign contracts. At least with the rookie salary cap and the salaries pretty much fall in line by pick at a mostly "set" price, it actually seems that it's getting better getting the rooks to camp on time. Of course, there always seems to be those exceptions. Ramsey! But yeah. KDub Eye-Eye will end up being the biggest tool in the process this year. |
