Junior Seau a Redskin??

Because he's a leader on the field. Rocky and Clemons would learn a LOT from him. Hell, maybe even Marcus Washington could learn some things.

The guy has a burning desire to win a superbowl. View it as a good thing that he's interested in coming here, it must mean he thinks we're on the brink of greatness.

I do agree with you, the injuries are a factor. However if we use him the right way, special packages, situations and such, I think he can contribute well and stay healthy all the way through.

The main thing is that if we were to sign him, it wouldn't be viewed as a major focal point of our defense and he's not trying to set a stupid record (Bruce Smith). He'd be here to help put us over the top, that's what matters most.

I don't think so, I don't think he can challenge Marcus Washington as the leader amongst the LBs. And then there's Renaldo Wynn, who the defense all looks up to as a leader in the locker room. You can't have that many "leaders", Seau would have to come in and take a back seat to the leaders who are already here. He'll have to fall in line.

Now that's not to say that he couldn't play the role of the good soldier. And he probably could teach Rocky a thing or two about offensive tendencies. But his skills are the main problem in my opinion. They're just too eroded at this point, and he's way too prone to injury. I'd rather see us focus on trying to develop the younger players. Seau was wrecking this league before Marcus Washington graduated high school. If you're a linebacker, you KNOW who Junior Seau is and what he's done. Naturally, people will defer to him, seek him out, ask him questions and follow his lead. And really, would that be such a bad thing? It's not like he has a bad reputation.

Not sure about the skills being horribly eroded, but the injuries are a concern. I agree with you about that.

When you bring a new guy in, part of the deal is that you have to teach him your terminology and how the defense works. This takes a fair amount of extra attention, mainly on the part of Dale Lindsey and GW in this case. I'm all for investing that teaching time in a young guy like Andre Carter or Adam Archuleta, but investing the time teaching a 38 year old who is way past his prime doesn't make much sense to me. It just takes valuable coaching attention away from Rocky and Chris Clemons. And for what, a marginal upgrade (if any) over the guys we have?

he's worked with dale lindsey before, he'd be a reserve and i doubt he'd take much time away from the other LBs cause, you know, he's been doing this for 17 years. If anything he'd help rocky and clemons come along FASTER because he's actually been a great LB for a VERY long time. his skills haven't eroded past usefulness yet, but he is an injury concern.

And he wouldn't be an upgrade, he'd be INSURANCE, in case your 2 question marks and the amazing holdman have trouble or there's an injury.

were you this harsh when we signed ray brown? a horribly old, skill-eroded FORTY-TWO year old offensive lineman who'd obviously take away too much coaching focus from the younger guys (since 15+ year vets have no possible way of knowing what to do at that point by themselves), and hurt the team's overall talent level just by his very presence on the roster?

yeah, old guys always suck. I would have been much happier with raymer as our primary OL backup last year too :P

let's use facts, facts are fun! he's been good the last four years when healthy. as a reserve, that'd still make him useful, and i'd use him over "worse than a trash can" holdman.


and for comparision, washington has had 4.3, 5.1, 6.7, and 5.8 tackles per game the last four years.

Bad comparison. Ray Brown was signed when Gibbs first came back, so he was actually a guy that the coaching staff had to spend LESS time with. That's the whole point, you want guys that can easily integrate, and Ray Brown was the perfect answer having played in Gibbs system under Bugel before. He was the one guy that knew what was going on while Gibbs and Bugel were coaching up the rest of the line.

You're probably right about Seau not requiring much coaching attention, now that I think about it. He'd be expected to sit in meetings, put in the time learning the playbook, and use his experience to get the job done.

But knowing Joe Gibbs, we're not going to sign any player for depth or insurance unless THEY CAN PLAY SPECIAL TEAMS. That's what our backups do, especially the LBs. Seau just doesn't fit. This one is all rumor and will never materialize, mark my words.

i'm pretty sure he used to while with San diego play mlb, but when he went to Miami who have Thomas as their mlb he shifted to the outside so he can play both.
