Overview
Montgomery has been a constant force in the middle of the line for the Gophers since midway through his sophomore year. Known for his ability to handle multiple blockers, he went on to start 31 of 46 games at Minnesota. He was a disruptive presence on the front wall that went on to register 25 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, the eleventh-best career total in school history.
Montgomery showed tremendous dedication to training the last two seasons, losing over thirty pounds in order to be quicker for his switch from defensive tackle to nose guard. While he proved to be an unselfish player who dealt with double teams constantly, some pro teams are also considering Montgomery for a possible switch to the offensive line. Still, he doesn't get his due for absorbing blockers and allowing linebackers to flow uninhibited to the ball. He is a great run-stopper who gets a tremendous push off the line of scrimmage.
After sitting out the first four games of the 2002 season, Montgomery joined Minnesota's defensive tackle rotation, recording 14 tackles (9 solos) with two stops for losses. He started six games at defensive tackle in 2003, coming up with 34 tackles (20 solos), two sacks and eight stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Montgomery shifted to nose guard in 2004, starting every game. He finished with 48 tackles (36 solos), three sacks and nine stops for losses. He earned All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention as a senior, producing three sacks, six stops behind the line of scrimmage, an interception and 45 tackles (25 solos).
In 46 games at Minnesota, Montgomery started 31 times. He registered 141 tackles (90 solos) with eight sacks for minus 59 yards and 25 stops for losses of 93 yards. He recovered three fumbles and caused two others. He also deflected four passes and intercepted two others for 3 yards in returns.
Analysis
Positives: Has excellent size, with a large wingspan, solid build with firm midsection and hips, big bubble and strong lower body muscle development...Has valid foot speed and initial quickness for a player his size...Very light on his feet, using his explosive initial burst to easily slip past blocks...Shows good field awareness to avoid angle blocks and traps...Leads with his hands coming off the snap, using them effectively to separate, getting a good push off his initial burst...Flashes the strength to hold ground at the point of attack, but plays better on the move rather when anchoring and reading...Locates the ball and maintains balance working through traffic, doing a fine job of not exposing his body to the hand punch...Active in pursuit, taking proper angles when working in the short area...Gets a good gap surge and shows impressive activity from the backside...Uses his frame and power well to squeeze the pocket...Has adequate agility redirecting to the inside and the pursuit quickness to make plays up field...Keeps his shoulders squared moving laterally.
Negatives: Needs to improve on keeping his feet moving while engaging, as he doesn't react to block pressure well and will get washed inside and struggle getting off blocks... Inconsistent in his pursuit efforts, lacking the spin ability to get to the ball...Needs to do a better job of getting off the low blocks...Tends to get too high in his stance, exposing his body and causing him to lose leverage...Has good natural strength, but needs to use it more often, especially when fist fighting with the guards and centers in double team action.

Draft Scout Player News
04/15/06 - Non-Combine Sleeper: Anthony Montgomery, DT, Minnesota: Just as some team will take a chance on the afore mentioned McDaniel, Montgomery, he of a 6-5, 310 frame, will almost certainly get a shot, as well. Montgomery has seen action in 44 games over his career and leaves with 137 career tackles, as well as 25 tackles for loss. Montgomery has unselfishly absorbed double-teams throughout his career and could surprise if surrounded by talent.
11/17/05 - "To see it all come together in our final home game was real special. That's been our problem in the past: We haven't hit on all cylinders on offense, defense and special teams. To see it come together like today means a lot." -- DT Anthony Montgomery on the effort against Michigan State.
10/31/05 - DT Anthony Montgomery was very tough against the Buckeye interior offensive linemen. Montgomery had six tackles, two TFL and one sack against Ohio State.
09/26/05 - DT Anthony Montgomery has to clog the middle at 6-5 and 305 pounds. He had just one tackle as the Boilers rushed for 180 yards.
