We traded for Sean Gilbert from the rams, then we eventually got 2 1st rnd. picks for him when carolina signed him. Desmond Howard was Gibbs' & Casserly's doing. Gibbs said he found "no holes" after they'd researched him. Casserly later said that all of the nfl had Howard rated that high too. Though admittedly Sean Gilbert wasn't any part of their success, Carolina made it to a Super Bowl since that trade, and we haven't.
