49ers | Team rejected trade involving Lelie
Sat, 22 Apr 2006 12:02:42 -0700
Matt Maiocco (http://www.kffl.com/link/19), of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat (http://www.kffl.com/link/32), reports the San Francisco 49ers (http://www.kffl.com/team/32/nfl) rejected a trade with the Denver Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) that involved Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) WR Ashley Lelie (http://www.kffl.com/player/622/nfl). The Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) were shopping Lelie for a second-round pick. 49ers (http://www.kffl.com/team/32/nfl) vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan said, "He does have some talent. He's more of a vertical guy, outside the numbers, and can stretch the field, but we had some issues with other things. (I'm) not saying he wouldn't fit in, but ... what kind of football player are we going to have when it's said and done?" He said the team would be interested if the Broncos' asking price drops dramatically.

Yeah, we're interested, but the thing is... he kinda sucks, and we know it.

the fact that lelie is already whining about wanting the ball more/being an unquestioned #1 and his 1 year contract (and the fact that he wants massive money in his new deal) probably hurt his value a bit.

and san francisco already has 1 whiny WR that wants to be the #1 already... and he's got more talent.

Okay, I've seen Lelie play. The dude cannot hold onto a ball if it's glued to his hands, and when he comes across the middle, he gets alligator arms in a hurry. He was supposed to be the next big deal when he came out of Hawaii, but I've not seen anything to impress me. I don't blame the 49ers for taking a pass on him at the 2nd round level, I'm not sure I'd give up ANY draft picks for the guy. He had one really good season in 04, and that's it.

who is that?

antonio bryant, who's had multiple 1k seasons, and is whiny.

and the only reason it was a good season is cause plummer forced the ball to him on almost every play... which really helped his int count ;)

he's a reasonable #2 and I don't see him ever being anything more. his hands are average, he's soft, and he's not good at adjusting to balls. He's tall and fast and that's it.

i agree with your assesment of lelies talent but i dont see anything wrong with wanting the ball more.the only problem i have is it shouldnt be handled thru the press

It's not that he wants the ball more, its that he is demanding that he be the #1 WR...
Rod Smith has been Great the last 10 or so years and is still pretty good. Lelie is a punk who doesnt want to earn his spot. He just wants to be forcefed the ball so his stats look good when he hits free agency.

Mike Nolan finally figured out how to stop an offense. Unfortunately it's his own. Other than Bryant who do they have at WR? Didn't they just trade Arnez Battle? We have Lloyd, is JJ Stokes still around? Seriously, who is on their roster that's better than Lelie? For a 2nd round pick that's not the worst deal. Will they get a better WR with that pick?

no they love battle. they traded rasheed wood, who's done nothing. And i highly doubt they'll find a better receiver than lelie in the 2nd round... WRs are just hard to judge (hardest position next to QB). If lelie is going to come in and b*tch about being the #1 though, they already have bryant who'd also demand to be #1. Why put up with 2 WRs like that when one is going to jet at the end of the year?
