Paintrain 04-13-2006, 03:48 PM Ramsey really didn't have any say in the matter once he requested the trade. In the Jets he has a chance to compete to be the starter which most other teams wouldn't have given him. Maybe he goes there and lights it up. I doubt it, but I hope for the best for him.
Sociofan 04-13-2006, 03:58 PM I would say that the Jets have an unstable QB situation. He was told he would be able to compete for the starting job but he has heard that one before. The Jets have a weak armed QB to throw short int's and they thought that a long int. would give them better field position.
I shouldn't laugh because I really like Ramsey, but damn that was funny.
offiss 04-13-2006, 04:10 PM Ramsey went to NY because they were willing to take him. His options were slim and none, folks. He took what he could get.
He liked his chances better trying to compete with an injured Chad Pennington than he did competing with Brunell in the here and now, and then competing with Campbell down the road.
Nobody buys Patrick Ramsey as a franchise QB, except for Offiss, and he's not a GM. If Ramsey is going to get a starting job, he's going to have to beat someone out for it. He's not good enough to just be handed the reins unquestionably. He needs to earn his career, starting now.
Everyone did before Gibbs arrived, and that includes almost everyone on this site at the time, that's why Miami was offering a high draft pick the season before, it was a brillant job by Gibbs to burn this kid down and get nothing for him.
Kind of funny no one had Bree's as a starting QB a couple of seasons ago, I do believe the Chargers drafted one Phillip Rivers to replace him with the intention of releasing him until Rivers held out, how did that pan out?
Bottom line your right I am no GM, and neither is Gibbs, why else would you give up a second rd pick for a QB who was about to be released and would have never sniffed a 43 million dollar contract? How about all these late round gems we heard about last year? Im still waiting to see just one. Now we are hearing the same thing again Gibbs talking about finding that late round gem, for some reason I believe he thinks that because Bobby Beathard was a genious at those type of picks so is he, well I am still waiting to see it!
Gibbs IMO has proved nothing about talent evaluation, Cooley is the 1 player I give him props for, the rest were simple top 10 picks that anyone could have made. Free agent signings? If you can't evaluate a current established, NFL starter than get out of the talent evaluation buisness. The signing of established talent at the rate we do is a big sign that we have no confidence in our ability to evaluate talent coming out of college. Lets see how we pan out this draft, I do hope we get it right.
724Skinsfan 04-13-2006, 04:14 PM Ramsey is going to be the next Trent Dilfer of the NFL. Decent enough talent but will always struggle for the starting role.

I'm not going to get into a debate about Gibbs' teambuilding methods and skills. The point of this thread was to examine why Ramsey ended up with the Jets. Quite simply put, everyone IN FOOTBALL now realizes he's nothing special at this point. He could be good, he could be bad. But he's got a ton of question marks surrounding him.
If GMs thought that Gibbs was responsible for destroying Ramsey's value over the last year, then logically they'd see something in him that leads them to believe he can be a great QB in this league if given a change of scenery and circumstance. Bottom line is nobody felt that way about him, and that's why he only garnered a 6th round pick.
I'm never going to understand why people think Ramsey is destined to be a top 10 QB in this league someday. When there are talents out there like Eli Manning, Peyton, Brady, Brees, Brad Johnson, McNabb, Culpepper, Roethlisberger, Carson Palmer, Delhomme, and Hasselbeck, I just don't understand what people see in Patrick Ramsey that makes them think he's going to one day join the ranks of those type QBs.
You're just wowed by arm strength, Offiss. He's one of the most innaccurate downfield passers I've ever seen. Ramsey is virtually incapable of hitting a receiver in stride on a deep route.

We've been wondering where you've been? You've been pretty quiet lately.

How could you say Brad Johnson, who will be 38 this year, is a top 10 QB. He's not a top 10 QB now, and he definitely won't be by the time Ramsey ever does (if he does)

That's what I was thinking. When Scneed mentioned him I did a mental cut to the gorilla cage a la Trading Places.
Update: Beeks. That's the name I couldn't remember.
Eddie Murphy (Billy Ray): "I forgot all about that guy."
(Cut to Gorilla Cage)
That Guy 04-13-2006, 04:49 PM Bottom line your right I am no GM, and neither is Gibbs, why else would you give up a second rd pick for a QB who was about to be released...
he didn't, the 2nd went in the portis trade.
scowan 04-13-2006, 04:51 PM I think Ramsey is a great guy, but I don't think he will ever be anything special at this point. Even his one long TD pass to Moss in the Giants game was a bad pass that Moss jumped for and made a guy fall down. Basically Moss made Ramsey look good. Even though some of us love to hate Brunell and his wimpy arm, he really knows how to play QB and I have a lot of confidence in him making good decisions. Will Ramsey ever get to that point? I wonder.
