Bet the mortgage that, by the end of the weekend, the Redskins will have added St. Louis strong safety Adam Archuleta (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5467) (the relationship between agent Gary Wichard and personnel chief Vinny Cerrato won't hurt on this one) and San Francisco end Andre Carter (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5454) to an already solid defense, one that statistically ranked No. 9 in the league in 2005.

Carter, who has started at end in the 4-3 and rush linebacker in a 3-4, will provide the Redskins the consistent upfield pass rusher they have been missing. Under brilliant coordinator Gregg Williams, one of the NFL's most creative defensive minds, Archuleta should dramatically upgrade his game. Archuleta is a liability when playing in space, but he could become a player in the mold of Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6352), with a bit less speed. Archuleta can be explosive over a short area, although he doesn't have Polamalu's range, and Williams will conjure up ways to move him around close to the line of scrimmage.

The Redskins picked up one of their targeted players Saturday when they traded with the 49ers for receiver Brandon Lloyd (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6460). The Skins gave up their third-round pick this year and their fourth-round selection in 2007.

I love the addition of Andre Carter, if it does happen. I've been screaming about a pass rushing DE for like the last 4 years. He would bring a whole different dimension to the D. He can consistently get up the field to rush the passer. I don't care what side they put him on, he's going to be a huge upgrade over Renaldo Wynn or Phillip Daniels. Hopefully, if they put him on the right, they'll move Daniels to the left side.

As for Archuleta, I'm not sold, but if Williams is, then I'll wait and see. If he comes in and steps up his game I'll be really pleased. If they turn him into Troy Polamalu I'll love that guy. I think that the Skins should still strongly consider keeping Omar Stoutmire and Ryan Clark because who knows what's gonna happen with ST.

I have to agree I'm a little nervous about archuleta. I'm still nervous about him in coverage. I guess if GW wants him he must feel like he can utilize him well.

I think Carter could come right in and have the same immediate impact that Marcus Washington had when he arrived

Im just thinking about the idea of Adam Archuleta and Sean Taylor in the secondary with Andre Carter, Corneilius Griffin and Philip Daniels on the D-line. And I guess our linebackers are pretty good too. This should be a lights out defense.

Do you have a link for this?

I agree. I think the Skins should look into Witherspoon and Peterson to fill the hole on the weakside. However, even if we end up plugging in a rookie or low priced vet not named Warrick Holdman I think we'll be fine.

I'm warming up to the idea of Archuleta. The more I read about him the more I like. Fast, big hitter, plays with passion, sounds like a Gregg Williams kinda guy!

That would be a pretty formidable defensive backfield, ST and AA laying monster shots... I can see WRs cringing and alligator-arming balls as I speak.

Sorry Matty but I've gotta disagree completely. Even though Archuleta may be talented, I'd prefer Ryan Clark since he's probably considerably cheaper. Clark is a younger player who has been with the team, and whereas Archuleta has been over-hyped and underachieving the last couple of years, Clark has been a total overachiever. I can't see any reason why the 'Skins are not making a stronger effort to re-sign Clark. :frusty:

Archuleta is clearly the more talented safety over Clark, that's not even debateable. In Williams' hands he could really develop into a monster. Just wait and see. Look at what happened with C-Griff, career underachiever with the Giants... sound familiar?
