jdlea 03-07-2006, 12:08 PM I know he's old and he has some injury issues, but if he doesn't want a ton of money I think the Skins should take a long look at Brentson Buckner. I like the way he plays the game, his personality and I heard he was leader for the Panthers. If he could stay healthy I think that putting him in with Griffin and adding 1 DE that can actually rush the passer would make this defensive line scary. Also, if he doesn't work out and doesn't cost much we already know we have Salave'a who is serviceable at DT. However, I don't think the Skins should be content with him as a starter, I think bringing in Buckner would give us just another option on the line and could end up being huge if he can return to form.
SmootSmack 03-07-2006, 12:09 PM Lots of talent, but I heard that his teammates didn't like him in Carolina. Plus I think I read he's considering retirement. Although for the right price anyone will un-retire.

Really? I didn't know that. I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, cause I really didn't.
On FSN South, while I was home, they were talking like he was a leader for the Panthers.

Let me see if I can find some link
jdlea 03-07-2006, 12:22 PM "Brentson was here when I arrived in 2002 and was an outstanding leader as well as player for us," Fox said. "He set a great example for our younger players in his preparation and will be missed."

Granted this is from panthers.com, so what were they gonna do...trash the guy? However, this is why I thought he was a leader on the team.
Schneed10 03-07-2006, 12:31 PM I love Salavea'a, I don't think he gets anywhere close to the credit he deserves. The guy is as strong as an ox and cannot be moved. He plays as if he's 350 pounds, which is exactly what you need for run defense. If we don't stop the run, we don't end up in many 2nd & long or 3rd & long situations. And if we don't have those situations, we can't blitz nearly as much. Our entire D starts with the corners and the run-stopping D line, and Salavea'a is a HUGE part of that. I wouldn't take Salavea'a out for the world.
Redskins_P 03-07-2006, 12:33 PM Salave'a is the man. I'm happy with him and Griffin. I would rather get a pass rushing DE.

"Anytime you decide to part ways with a player like Brentson, it's very hard," Hurney said. "He's been a flag carrier for us in the locker room and a terrific player. We'll miss his leadership, his preparation and his play."
from the link earlier.... seems like a solid guy. I know the panthers.com article isn't the bible but it atleast sheds some light.
jdlea 03-07-2006, 12:39 PM Last year was Salave'a's best season his stats:
32 tackles, 1 sack
Buckner last year:
36 tackles, 1 sack
Buckner's best year:
55 tackles, 7 sacks, but that was back in 2000
More recently:
2004:
41 tackles, 4 sacks
That said, I just saw Buckner's birthday. I didn't realize he was about to turn 35. I thought he was more like 31 or 32. I still think that bringing him in to add him to the rotation wouldn't be bad, but now I don't think it's as good of an idea when I made this thread.
skins009 03-07-2006, 12:49 PM The best DT available is Rockery Bernard from the Seahawks. He is a great interior pass rusher, which is exactly what we need. Big Joe and Grif Stuffing the run on 1st and 2nd down and then Bernard coming in on 3rd. He would also give us a good 3 man DT rotation which will make everyone play better.
