Living in Atlanta and being married to a Bulldog (did I just call my wife a dog?), I watched every Georgia game last season and can attest that Leonard Pope will be a hell of a tight end. He has all the attributed needed for the position, and he's a player. If we lose Robert Royal due to cap concerns or free agency (and that's not necessarily a bad thing), I'd love to see Pope wearing burgundy and gold in 2006.

let me say this again,we dont need a te(at least not drafting one with our one and only high pick)

I disagree. Tight ends are valuable in Gibbs'/Saunders' system. Another good TE to complement Cooley could really add to our passing attack and running game. Plus, I don't see us getting an impact wideout in the second round.

he is 6'7" and he's a complete tight end. he's probably top 2 in TE blocking this draft, he should be around at our pick in the 2nd. It might be better strategy to get a OG/OT and take klop in the 3rd though, since most of the best OG prospects will be gone before our second pick. He's missing elite TE speed, but only 4-5 guys in the nfl have that.

but i've been up on him for a while.

I doubt he is going to be around that late in the second round.

This thread wasn't created as a "Let's draft him" type deal, but he said the Redskins were really pursuing him so I wanted to get more information on the kid. In his interview he sounded like the Joe Gibbs type. Hard worker, down to Earth, said he was throwing a party in his home town, inviting everyone for draft day, etc.

So I _could_ see us going after this guy, but I just wanted some backup information.

In my opinion -- we take the best player we can get our hands on at that spot. We have very few positions on this team (especially right now) that we're "set" at.

If he falls to us in the second he would have to take him. It would be a matter of best player available. Unless he really stuggles at the UGA pro day he will be long gone so I don't think we will have to worry about it. I actually read that he ran a 4.53 which is even more impressive.

If he's as good as they say then let's take him if he falls in our lap. Maybe the 2nd wide receiver position isnt really a big deal after all. Remember Saunder's can be very creative with tight ends.

he's a solid pick, but squarely behind davis, and behind lewis on most boards and fasano on a lot of others. I'd say he's the #2 TE in the draft, an only because the #1 is absolutely insane.

This TE class is unbelievabley deep. We could put all the TE prospects Names in a hat and easily pick an above average prospect. Popes a good prospect and I would welcome him to the Redskins. However lets not forget, hes no Vernon Davis then again, not many are to begin with.

I think the team may be seriously looking at Pope. Here's why:

1) They really didn't make much of an attempt to keep Royal around. This tells me that they had an improvement in mind, and I don't think that was Fauria.

2) Jason Dunn, who played for Al Saunders in KC is the perfect blocking TE for a Joe Gibbs offense. He could be aquired relatively cheap (6th rounder should do it). To date, I haven't heard as much as a rumor linking the teams. I don't think this is because the Skins lack interest in him, but I don't think they will even consider trading for him until after the draft, because of interest in a guy like Fasano or Pope.

3) Fauria's contract is less than 20% signing boni, meaning he could be cut with a very small cap hit on the eve of the season.

here's the thing, we have 2 TEs, pope probably won't be there when we pick, and we have MUCH more urgent needs than TE at this point (with only one first day pick). They didn't feel like paying royal 2$mill a year cause he kinda sucks, that doesn't mean they're drafting a TE (FA OL are 2-4mill a year, quality FA TEs max at 1.5-2mill unless they're gates or gonzo. moneywise, OL is the best choice, though CB also makes sense).
