History: 1st Round Draft Choice 1951 Leon Heath
With the 2006 Draft coming up and it being a big topic here I thought I would pull out one of the Redskins earlier 1st round pick and see what they got and may have been after.
My information comes from a newly aquired 1951 Bowman Gum, Inc. football card. Sports cards had been around since the 1920's but football cards made a brief 1935 National Chicle set until 1948 when the Bowman company started making Football cards. Seems they skipped 1949 but from 1950 till the present in one form or another they have continued.
Leon Heath
Halfback - Washington Redskins
Age: 22; Residence, Sooner City, Norman, Okla.
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200
"Entering pro football for first time in 1951. Played fullback for Oklahoma. Led nation's backs in 1949 in ball carrying with 9.12 average per try. In 3 straight Sugar Bowl games - 1949, 1950, 1951. Carried the ball 102 times in 1950 for 606 yards. Scored 36 points. Chosen No. 1 in player draft by the Redskins. Was All-American in 1950."
No. 106 in the 1951 SERIES
