I bought an external DVD/CD USB 2.0 burner recently and it was working just fine until last night when my computer stopped recognizing the device. It says the device has malfunctioned and it gives me the driver update wizard. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get it working again, I tried different USB ports and it still won't work.

The drive is practically brand new. I tried looking for answers on the manufacturer's site but that didn't help. Is the drive messed up?

Doubtful. Have you tried uninstalling your USB drivers and letting Windows redetect them?

I would delete all of these from your device manager and let Windows redetect.

I'll give that a try later tonight...

I tried deleting just the device, but I didn't try deleting the USB hubs.

thanks

You know what's strange, whenever I plug in my USB thumb drive it always seems to cause issues with my computer. I was working with files from my thumb drive last night and right after is when I noticed the problems with my drive. Maybe just a coincidence?

What model of computer do you have? We have a model of Dells here that had USB problems prior to a BIOS update.

That link should start downloading the specific BIOS update for your machine. You need a floppy disk to install it. Once you make the disk, put it in the machine and restart. DO NOT turn off the machine or unplug it while the update is going because you could really mess some things up. BIOS updates can make a world of difference in performance and everything else.

No problem. Let me know how it works out. (I'd also recommend unplugging all USB devices before you do this.)
