I'm about to put up some posts, over the next month or so, for each positional need the redskins might want to address. I figured i'd start out with some resources and a basic list of possible needs as well as some thoughts.

Redskins Draft Choices:
2nd (53)
3rd (85)
5th (149*)
6th (181*)
6th (186* from Carolina)
7th (213*)

-Traded: 1st (22 to Denver) and 4th (117* to Denver)
*Subject to change according to number of compensory picks assigned by the NFL.

Redskin Needs (in order of importance):
1) WR #2
2) Backup OL (G/T, starter quality)
3) DE (pass rush focus)
4) CB #3
5) TE #2 (blocking)
6) K
7) Backup LB
8) WR #4

Possible Needs:
1) DT #3
2) P
3) SS
4) QB #3

Not every need is important, and some will be filled by undrafted guys decided on during training camp. I will eventually post a seperate thread for each need and list free agents and draft possibilities. A final post will detail possible strategy and how to pay for everything. Obviously cost control is important, but the values of free agents can vary wildly and their prices for this offseason have not been set. The scouting and discussion of actual talent, however, is unaffected by market conditions.

My following Threads will be linked below and follow these assumptions until proven otherwise:
-Bowen, Noble, Hall, Harris, Jacobs, and Raymer are all cut
-Holdman is not re-signed
-Ramsey will be gone for a various 3rd or 4th round pick
-The skins get one compensory pick somewhere in the 2nd day of the draft
-Lavar will be back with a cheaper deal
-Wynn and royal stay as depth (Wynn is expensive, but well liked and can play DT)

In-depth (Needs):
Wide Receiver #2, Reserve Offensive Lineman (G/T), DE (pass rush focus), Corner Back #3,
Tight End #2 (blocking), Kicker, Reserve Linebacker, Wide Receiver #4

In-depth (Possible Needs):
Defensive Tackle #2/#3, Punter (http://www.thewarpath.net/showthread.php?p=150402), Strong Safety, Quarterback #3

I know it's not the most interesting position, but with only a couple stats to look at, it makes for a faster analysis and a good starting point.

I doubt the redskins will be able to immediately address their needs with this year's draft. Had they held on to their draft picks this could have been possible but they didnt. Hopefully they can draft a few players that can contribute in a few years.

at our pick this year we would have gotten omar jacobs who isn't as good or been involved in a MASSIVE bidding war to move up and take culter who i'm not nearly as high on as a lot of others.

I like that we diddn't try to bandaid the QB spot like dallas has done. at the 2nd pick we could very easily get a starting SS (like greg blue), a starting TE (klop), a starting G (C spencer, who can play tackle too... the only reason he's low is due to being a 2 year starter (spent his first 2 years as a DT) and he needs to work on technique a bit). In the 3rd we could get a situational pass rusher (lawson, mcclover) or a starting blocking TE (tim day who can catch too). We can get undrafted guys for punter and WR #4 (6'6" D quillen).

so we can still get immediate help with future upside.

53 players on a roster, 7 picks a year... players don't play for 53 or even 26 years, so that means 3rd rounders and beyond make up a large part of a roster and 2nd and 3rd rounders have to start for each team just based on numbers alone.

even more importantly, if you have starters who were 4th and 5th rounders they are tremendous value as far as the cap is concerned because their contracts are cheap. even better with free agents, although their original contracts tend to be much shorter and so they want starters money as soon as they can get it. look at the pats who have some low round picks starting. it allows them to spend bigger bucks on their free agents. they do so many things well in the front office.
