I am sure with this latest move to bring in Al Saunders that many of you are as quick as me and have wondered as I have been the last few days if we may see Joe Gibbs become just our GM and not our GM/coach in a few years.
With him assuming a more CEO type of position this next year, I think he is becoming more of an on-the-field General Manager, instead of our coach. It is very easy to me to see the progression taking place where either Greg Williams or Saunders will succeed Gibbs in 3 years if not sooner. I beleive Gibbs will stay on, after his contract, and just be our GM. Maybe Vinny will step aside!

This wouldn't surprise me at all...I think he would love to stay with US like Levy is now doing in Buffalo...but we would have to figure out who our Offensive Cord. will be??? I believe this will be a one year and done for Al....leaving for the RIGHT Head coaching spot after next year.

Gregg Williams is definitely being groomed as our next head coach (which thrills me to death because I love the guy). But it's clear Gibbs is trying to structure the team in order to foster continuity. He knows that Bugel, Burns, and Breaux will be leaving when Gibbs retires. That would certainly explain why we have so many cooks in the kitchen right now, because Gibbs is trying to stock the cupboard so that when he leaves, the offensive coaching cupboard isn't left bare.
When you have SO many quality coaches, you're bound to see some of them leave for head coaching jobs. But that's why you have both Blache and Williams. And it's why you have a Bill Musgrave. If you lose one of those top guys, hopefully you have people on hand that can keep steering the ship in the right direction.
I don't mean to say Musgrave would be an automatic replacement for Saunders if he flies the coop. But he has been an offensive coordinator before, he has had some time to learn from Gibbs and absorb the offense, and he would be a logical choice.
Or we could just hire even more coaches!

And I think in a couple of years time maybe Hixon and Byner assume larger roles. They could be elevated to coordinator status.

According to Saunders, this is his last move. We'll see, though.

So now that Gibbs won't be calling plays what will he be doing on the side lines during the games? Making calls like when to go for it on forth down, when to punt verse kick etc..?

There are many coaches, most of them in fact, that serve as the head coach, and leave coordinator duties to someone else. Jimmy Johnson did the same thing in Dallas -- Dave Wannstedt with defense, and Norv with offense. I think this is going to ease the burden on Gibbs, allow him to assume more 'motivational' duties on the sidelines, and he'll make the call on fourth down, punting, and so on.

I think Gibbs will be better able to judge the overall flow of the game better with the Playcalling duties removed from his mind on game day. He will be free to concentrate on the big picture and not the details of playcalling. I think maybe he has realized that he got too conservative in the past and played not to lose. The Chiefs, however, have always just kept pouring it on. We will have a fun team to watch next year, even if they don't improve!
The shape and structure of the organization Gibbs is building is interesting. It looks like its almost Co-coach's with GW, and Al Sharing the head coach duties. Joe is GM. Different it may be, but you can't help but get the feeling the power they are bringing to bear will create a Redskins juggernaut!
