Southpaw 01-17-2006, 02:12 PM Lots of teams have won titles with "`1wont lose the game QBs", if the skins give MB the weapons he can become one also.
The only true game manager to win a Superbowl was Trent Dilfer, and that was because the Ravens defense gave up less than 10 points a game in 2000. Brad Johnson has passed for 3800+ a few times in his career, so he doesn't qualify as a true game manager.
I'm sure Brunell can duplicate his perfomance of this year, next season, but he's not going to play any better than that. He'll be 36 by then, and football players don't age like wine.
Southpaw 01-17-2006, 02:19 PM Brunell made plenty of big plays during the course of the year, saying he only made big plays during the first Dallas game is really understating things.
My point was, that was the only game where the big plays were needed to win, and he was actually responsible for them. Scrambling for a first down, to keep a clock eating drive alive doesn't fall into the same category as throwing two touchdowns with eight minutes left in the game.
And I agree that Gibbs doesn't need an MVP quarterback, but he does need one who can make the throws when the chips are down, and Brunell hasn't done that since the first Dallas game.
hail_2_da_skins 01-17-2006, 02:55 PM Mark Brunnel had a GOOD year and did a GOOD job of managing the team. For the team to advance to the next level, they need a quarterback that can make plays and not just manage the team. Even with an upgrade in the wide receiver corps, Mark Brunnel is not the guy. Patrick Ramsey is not the guy. I'm not sure if Jason Campbell is the guy but I'm willing to see if he is. I think he gives the Skins the best chance to advance to the next level if he utilizes his skills he displayed in college.

Other than the season Rypien had in '91, Gibbs has never had a really big time QB. Even in '91 the offense was still heavily centered around the ground game.
Personally I don't think we need a Favre type of QB to win games, Gibbs' formula calls for a QB to play smart and efficient above all, and that's what MB did this year.
????????????????????????
Did you ever hear of a QB named Joe Theisman??????????
The QB who manned the helm when we set the all time scoring record in 83????????????
91' was a well balanced attack, Rypien was throwing the ball all over the place that year.
Did you ever hear of a player named Dan Fouts? He was the QB for the chargers when Gibbs was their offensive coordinator I do beleive they knew a thing or 2 about throwing the ball downfield, Gibbs knows how to use a good QB, problem was Rypien, Williams, Scroeder, were not good QB's, which was a testement to his ability to build and run an offense that didn't need a good QB, just a QB who could get by.
In case anyone didn't notice, if your 1 dimensional your probably going to lose, as we saw against Seattle, they keyed on our running game, and dared Brunell to beat us in the air, just like Philli, and Tampa did, and guess what Brunell failed miserably. I ask this question, who won those last 2 games? That's right not Brunell, our defense won both games. What happened when our defense couldn't put it in the end zone? We lost, even though our defense and special teams handed Brunell 3 turnovers. We were lucky to get into the playoffs, and because Brunell couldn't win any close games ALA, Denver, Kansas city, San Diego, we had to play every game on the road, without a week off to rest up, yet he had a great season, give me a break, he's a week link on a team that is outplaying him.
I am also tired of hearing he need's another WR excuse, he had arguably the best WR in the league this year, and the same in his TE/HB, he also had a proven winner and game breaker in Patten, yes I said PROVEN! And he could do nothing with him, funny Carolina seems to be able to get the ball to Smith and he probably has less help in the passing game than Moss, so what is it? I guess Smith has a QB who can get the ball to him, and obviously does it when it counts.
Brunell doesn't need more WR's who can get open, our WR's need a QB who can get them the ball!
offiss 01-17-2006, 03:09 PM wow, I get excited hearing that from gibbs
hope that we have a future superstar qb, who does not only like to run aka mike vick, vince young
but also qb who is accurate and a decision maker ala brunell and brady
Now I have heard everything, runs like Vick? Decision maker like Brunell or BRADY? STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!
Where's on earth do we get the idea that Campbell is a decision maker? Who can't be accurate in practice? We can only hope that he's better than Vick, and Brunell, if he's not significantly better it was a wasted pick.
As for mentioning Campbells name with Bradys? You really can't be serious?????????????
Redskins_P 01-17-2006, 03:17 PM I think Campbell has the tools to be a good/great QB. From what I hear, he is accurate and can move in the pocket ( No, I'm not saying he's the next Vick/Favre/Brady ).
If anything, we should be excited that we have a young QB with a lot of promise. Only thing we need to see now is that if he can play at this level. He was a winner in college, but he had a great running game behind him.
Until he wins a game (not preseason) in the NFL, I'm not comparing him to any QB at that level. But I do feel like he has the tools and potential to be a good QB for the Skins.
Time will tell.
Skins fan 44 01-17-2006, 03:18 PM Well maybe it will be a case of history repeating itself. Brunell (Schroyer) starts the season and Campbell (Williams) finishes it and wins the Super Bowl. Lets just hope that Campbell can last longer than Williams did after he won the Super Bowl.
TheMalcolmConnection 01-17-2006, 03:20 PM I don't care who is QB as long as they freakin' LOOK for the other receivers!
Redskins_P 01-17-2006, 03:23 PM I don't care who is QB as long as they freakin' LOOK for the other receivers!
And the receivers get open and catch the damn ball!!!
Basically we need a 2nd receiver with some cojones/balls (not Taylor Jacobs).

So are you willing to stand pat with Patten/Jacobs/Thrash??
My point regarding the QB is Gibbs wants balance, his offense will always be centered around the running game and basically as the running game goes so does the entire offense. Theismann did have a huge season in '83, but it's kinda funny that his '84 numbers look very similar to Brunell's of '05.
