I still think that giving up that 2nd was too high as well. RBs grow on trees for Denver but a shutdown CB is rare indeed. I am not saying that Portis wont do well for us, but if Denver wouldn't tkae the trad straight up or for like a 4th-5th rounder then we coulda went for Dillon or traded Baily for Draft picks.
Don't get me wrong here -- I'm extremely glad to have Portis aboard. Despite the way Denver churns out RBs, he's different - he's elite. And considering the fact that Bailey wanted out regardless of the kind of money we would offer, I think that we did a hell of a job getting a back of Portis's caliber out of it all.
Having said all that -- I just think that the 2nd rounder was unnecessary. I think they would've done the deal without the pick involved. They needed a corner and loved Bailey, and if we would've played a little hardball, we could've kept the 2nd and landed another D-lineman. Hell, Starks dropped to the 3rd round.....
Some of you speak of the deal like you were involved in the negotiations.
How do we know what the Broncos were asking for?
Who's to say the 'Skins just offered up Bailey and a 2nd rounder??
Perhaps the price was higher and a 2nd is what was settled on?
Snyder is a businessman, he knows how to work a deal, I doubt he just threw all his cards on the table and said here ya go Denver, take whatever you want.

I dont know whta Denver wanted, but I think Bailey and a 2nd was too high. The move over all seemed to be made fast. I can't believe that no one on the NFL wanted a top 5 CB.

That's why I'm using words like "I THINK".
That's my opinion -- nothing more. Take it for what it's worth.
I don't think anyone's going to assume I'm a high ranking Redskin official chatting to footy on a message board.

I think that a majority of Denver fans felt they got the bad end of the deal. I doubt very much that we could have gotten Portis for less than we did. I've seen absolutely nothing that would indicate that the second-rounder was "unecessary." If we didn't give them the second-rounder, every indication is that the deal wouldn't have happened. I think it was a good deal.

The trade made sense cap wise. We had better get used to giving away picks because we are already dishing next years.

Matty:
I have to quibble with you on your interpretation that the deal was Portis for a 2nd round pick because Bailey was a goner anyway. Remember, Bailey was the "franchise player" so he wasn't going anywhere unless the Skins made a deal for him.
The test of the deal is to see what Tatum Bell turns out to be for Denver.
SUPPOSE Portis gains 1500 yards and Bell gains 1300 yards. Then the skins gave up Bailey for a difference of 200 yards per year. NOT A GOOD DEAL!!
SUPPOSE Portis gains 1500 yards and another 500 yards receiving and Bell only gains 800 yards. MONSTER GOOD DEAL!!
Frankly, the fact that the Skins were able to get an elite player (Portis) in a deal involving one of their players who was in a snit over contract negotiations is a pretty remarkable thing in the first place.
Bailey was franchised, but let's face it, he wasn't coming back. Maybe the 'Skins did have to sweeten the deal a bit to move him, but in the big picture I think it's a deal that will work out fine for both sides. Mediots like King like to make it seem like the 'Skins were absolutely raped in the deal, which just isn't the case.

If Portis gains 1500 yards this season, I don't care what Tatum Bell does. I'll still call it a good deal for the Redskins. :)

Good call Phinehas. If Portis has a big year and helps take the Skins back to the playoffs I could really care less what Bell or Bailey do for Denver. The deal is done and over with, no sense in crying over it now.
